hello,
my 90 has had an MOT and failed today but not on the steering problem thats getting progressivly worse over the recent weeks.
ill be driving along at the speed limet or under because thats all the landy does :lol: and ONLY SOMTIMES not all the time when i hit a bump the steering seriously vibrates from side to side and the whole landy vibrates, it feels like a tyre has gone flat. i have been putting the problem down to the slightly loose powersteering belt untill on friday when driving out to recover a friend from a ditch i hit a bump coming off a roundabout and it did the problem so bad that my dad in the passenger seat could feel it and said i have a flat tyre :shock: . it feels a little bit like the power steering pump stops, starts, stops, starts...... is this possible in the way i have mentioned.
Advice needed please,

Sounds more like loose radius arm bushes

Does is resonant, as in start as small shake/wobble then rapidly increase violently out of control until you reduce speed?
Have seen this on a m8's truck, its horrible to witness as both front wheel wobble out of control. Only happened now and again, certain speed - bump in road and bingo.
In that case it was worn Panhard bushes!
Have a look underneath at the panhard rod (rod in front of the axle which is behind the steering rod) get someone to turn the steering wheel from side to side while you check for play in both ends of the rod. Any play there will be the culprit and you'll need new bushes.

i've had this on my series3, it was the preload on the swivels. i was told what it could be by a rangerover driver, he had experienced the same symptoms
i dont know if defenders are that sensitive to it
i'd check over all the bushes first as mentioned above though

Just had the same problem was the panhard rod bushes, easy job only took half an hour to do.

Our offices close at 5:00pm 21st December and re-open at 8:00am Wednesday 2nd January.
Our trade counter will be open for visitors on Saturday 22nd December 8:30am to 1:00pm.

Yep so there still open this weekend Saturday 8.30-1 and not sunday!

swivles need a few shims taking out to take up abit of play :wink:
jack up a wheel and feel for play by rocking the wheel 12oclock and 6 oclock positions :wink:
get someone to watch where they play is, if the whole lot moves on the chrome ball its the swivles
if only the brake disc moves then its the wheel bearings
to check the panhard get some one to rock the steering whilst you watch either end of the arm to see if the bush's are nackerd
usually, when the panhard bush's are gone, the vehicle will wonder on the road, i.e, if you hit a bump the steering will snatch to one side
another tell tale sign, when you turn the wheel, the body of the landy will move before a wheel moves
the radius arms, it'll pull one way when pulling away, and pull the other way when slowing down
id say its the swivles over the others

im very surpised to find out what it actually was!!!
the bottom steering universal joint has almost completly worn out and the right hand side seering guard bolts had worked loose, theese hold on important steering buts
it was the bolts having half an inch of play in them that created the violent wobble and now there tightend up the universal joint makes the steering wonder all over the road :shock:
hopefully mot will be passed on monday ready for some christmas holiday fun :lol:

surprised no one suggested steering damper.

I was thinking maybe steering ball joint cos mine used to do that before I changed it. But you've fixed it now.

if it wonder's check the panhard bush :roll:

it had all the bushes for suspensions steering and so on changed before we did the landy rally in september so in theory it should still be in good condition i will check it tomorrw

should be ok
but then again.....i get through a set of bushes every challenge event :evil:
and rear trailing arm to chassis bushes kin hell !!
every outing now they are shot :lol:
looks like gonna have fit polys there cos of the flex
