would you think its a good idea to link road tax and mot together so the tax disc and mot were one item
also i think all cars should have public liability insurance linked to the tax/mot then no car would be uninsured ie insure the car not the driver
now i await the can of worms type of reply
good idea or not ?

To be fair, they are already linked - you can't get a tax disc without a valid MOT. I don't see the legally insured majority being too happy with their tax going up to cover uninsured drivers either (unless insurance went down to match, which won't happen!)

They should do it the same way as the americans where you get 3rd party insurance in with your yearly payment for your number plate!

Scrap road tax, its a joke.
expensive tax just encourages people so scrap their cars and buy a new one thats in the low tax band, which is very very bad for the environment.
fuel duty should include everything now, and you should just get sent a tax disc for free when you mot your vehicle so you can park it on the road.

If they insist on Tax the inclusive Road Traffic act insurance is the way to go; the 'optional' insurance premiums would shoot down when the insurance companies had to get business on merit rather than legal mandate.
Better still try and tie that into fuel tax so that foreign cars are guaranteed to be insured as well.

Absolutely and make valid insurance part of the MOT test. I'm sure most tester are just as able as Post Office staff to check an insurance certificate, not that they should need to with the national database after all, all testing stations are online now I believe.

As has been mentioned, just issue a license plate that covers tax, mot, and basic 3rd party cover.
Cops wouldnt need to radio up/check validities, if you bought a car you would know if it was covered, an out of date plate would stand out and be easily spotted.
All those fancy number recog systems would have an easier and simpler life...
Nah, sounds too simple, theres probably some minority in society, whose religion/ethics deny them such a thing, so we wont do it.......
After the fairytale of newyork thing, my views today are somewhat clouded......

Here there is NO MOT but you pay rego (TAX) with insurance included..about $400 for 12 months .
