Which is worse?
A spare tyre with loads of tread which is a different size to the road wheels or one of the same size as the road wheels but only just above the wear bars for tread depth?

You should never use a different sized tyre on a vehicle for one it's illegal and secondly could well be dangerous.

Personally i'd use the same size spare with legal tread. 8)

In due course when i get my new tyres that will be the plan to have 5 the same. This is just for now, temp job. I suppose the other alternative is to abandon the spare altogether and use that tyre foam?

What size, Ive got 4 decent tyres in the for sale bit that you can have!!
If its 15" rims, come fetch em.

THE ROLLING SIZE MUST BE THE SAME AS YOUR TIRES, WIDTH ISNT THAT IMPORTANT AS A GET YOU HOME JOBBIE, BUT IF YOU USE A SMALLER TYRE YOU WILL [!Expletive Deleted!] YOUR AXLE, I THINK QUITE QUICKLY AS WELL.

Not many 4x4 have space savers. More importantly these have been thoroughly tested by the manufacturer for homologation and safety and all that guff.
IT IS ILLEGAL to use a tyre of a different size on any one axle and to use thinner tyres on the back than the front.
So, your options.
No spare and a tin of YAK
Spare of nominaly the same size but worn down, drive home carefully
Check your breakdown cover includes tyres
non-compatible spare and take the risk of getting stopped.
I can't get my spare in either, so I go laning with Tim as his spare will fit :D

If you go for the last option and have a flat only fit it to the front, the LSD in the rear won't like having different sizes fitted each size, front will be ok in 2WD or 4WD only when you really need it.

considering you are posting means your car is at home? NOW would be a good time to take the spare to a garage and get a cheap remould of the same size fitted before you find out the hard way

I thin you'll find that a spacesaver spare has the same diameter as the standard wheels fitted to the car by the manufacturer. having 1 different diameter wheel fitted to your vehicle is illegal and an MOT failure. unless it's a motorbike we're talking about.

In the absence of adequate cash(seemingly the wife thinks new tyres for my truck are not a suitable gift from me to her for christmass!) for a new or remould spare of appropriate size and with the 5th alloy of the set still showing 1.7 to 2mm of tread across it's width i'm going with that for now.
When i get some knoblies i'll either put one of the better old ones to the spare or get a set of 5 fresh tyres if i'm feeling flush.
