Title: 'Sentry Boxes'
Post by: Bush Tucker Man on December 09, 2007, 21:56:04
Whilst out on my bike this afternoon.
On my way home, I passed a electricity pole (the telephone pole type)

Even though I've passed it 'umpteen times' before, I'll admit I've never noticed the  (green) 'sentry box' at the base containing the switch gear/relays (well, I'll assume that's what the contents are)

It was roughly here (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=447500.999999208&Y=428000.947473833&width=700&height=400&gride=447299.999999208&gridn=428099.947473833&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=grid&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&keepicon=true&zm=1&scale=25000)

Is it a survivor from the past, or are they still in common use in other places??

Still used, infact growing in numbers where cable broadband is expanding, though modern ones are steel sheet not cast.

No, this one is quite literally the size of a (stereo-typical) Sentry box & is faded green wood.

I meant to photograph it this morning whilst I was out on the bike, but didn't go that way

I'll try to do so one morning this week

I think I'm riding down to HolmeMoss tomorrow.
If not & I end up in the area of the box, I'll take a picture (so ong as I remember to take the camera in the mini saddle-bag

Do you know?, I was thinking of something else when I saw it & it didn;t actually register until I was going down Gauk Street in Fairburn

It's either in the circle, or on the lane that cuts over from Burton Salmon (Lunnfields Lane)

Either way, as you head towards the (old) A1 it's on your right

Due to time constraints, I didn't manage to head down towards HolmeMoss, so went out east instead.
I packed one of the 'digital-compacts' & went via Fairburn.

So this is the wooden box in question

Note that there's 2 boxes featured

The smaller (pole mounted) one is here (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=447500.999999208&Y=428000.947473833&width=700&height=400&gride=447299.999999208&gridn=428099.947473833&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=grid&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&keepicon=true&zm=1&scale=25000), and the larger 'sentry box' is 300yards or so further away, on Lunnfields Lane (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=447500.999999231&Y=428000.947387922&width=700&height=400&gride=447599.999999231&gridn=427899.947387922&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=grid&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&keepicon=true&zm=1&scale=25000)

Never noticed the first one though must have been past it hundreds of times on 4, 2  or no wheels, the second I've barely ever been passed so haven't seen.

No worries, like many things ('street furniture' included), if it's familiar, you barely give it a second glance

Yes, those are nice survivors.
I've seen the one you mention in the past.

The one I feature is, as the accompanying text, states at the bottom of Garrowby Hill on the A166 (the Stamford Bridge - Bridlington/Driffield road)
(it's located more or less above the 'E' in East Riding (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=480000&Y=456000&width=700&height=400&gride=493557.235433188&gridn=464780.373785484&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=freegaz&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&keepicon=true&zm=1&scale=200000))

I very much like the one on the A591 between Grasmere & St John in the Vale (Lake District)
That's in a wonderful position, if it's still there??

Can't find an on-line photo at the moment of that. depsite various search phrase combinations
