Title: GreenWay - Colway Tyres Gone Out of Business
Post by: Saffy on December 02, 2007, 08:42:27
Old news now but I don't think it been mentioned here before, and I only found out yesterday

Heard a rumor and had it confirmed by Mark at Sowden tyres that Colway / Greenway tyres have gone belly up (about 6 weeks ago!). They still haven't dropped their website, but my experience is that belly up companies live the webby going till end of contract.

That means no more good budget tyres such as Greenway Anaconda's or Colway Mt's :(  long live Insa Turbo special track.

Found a news article:

UK retread firm in administration     13/11/2007
By Katie Coyne

C-tyres locked out of factory after failing to pay rent.

13 November 2007 – Retread manufacturer C-Tyres in Langley Moor, Durham, has made its 100 staff redundant and brought in administrators after it was locked out of its factory.

C-Tyres failed to pay its rent and was served a forfeiture notice by the landlord last month, which blocked access to the factory and stock inside.

C-Tyres are the sole manufacturer of Colway and Greenway retread tyres and boasted being able to produce tyres to fit almost any major car, van, 4x4, and light or heavy truck.

All cars in the UK’s Lombard Rally, which was held at the beginning of this month, are required to run on Colway tyres.

Director of recovery at debt recovery specialists Tenon, in Sunderland, Steven Ross, said: “The company clearly had financial difficulties otherwise it would have been able to keep up-to-date with rent and prevent the landlord taking the action. The landlord was owed considerable rent arrears.”

He added: “I am talking to the landlord at the moment in order to simply gain access to the property.

“The workforce have received forms which will enable them to submit claims. They will receive payment from the DTI via the redundancy fund. There is also a union which should assist.”

A buyer is still being sought and Tenon Sunderland can be reached on: 0191 511 5000.

Sounds like the landlord locking them out was the final straw, not a decision they took lightly I hope.

Thats me screwed on many levels if I get a ripped tyre or two.... the Zuke runs C-Trax and the Fourtrak Macho's....

I wonder what the debts are?

Could be bought for a quid..... with the debts.....

Anyone got 10p?

If the debts outweight the assets then it might be bought for a song, but TBH that indicates it's a money pit and only someone with the knowledge and the constacts could get it back into profit.

I'm not the biggest fan of remoulds but I believe they have their place and in the current climate (no punn intended) of environmental
conciousness the likes of Colway were a strong point in our favour.

I'm sure that if there is a sustainable profitable market for remoulds that something will come out of it.  Do you think though that perhaps they were too cheap?

Well there is 1 upside to this, no one will be able to put the dreadful Greenway Anaconda's on that I have on my Landy. They are good in the mud but very scarey on the road

What issues you had with them on road? I have had none with the anconda's so far and the Colway MT's I had before these behaved very nicely on road.  I imagine if changing from non aggressive tyres to anacondas or similar without changing driving style to suit would quickly enlighten driver to the flaws (if flaws are not solely to blame on the tyre).

On the flip side my halfshafts are not too impressed though

Looks like it'll be Insa turbo sahara's for me next.

hate to say it, it was more than unpaid rent which did it for them..

C-tyres were the last UK remold company for the reason that it is just to expensive to manufacture in the Uk, as with many things...

As far as i know they were also owed a fair bit of money aswell as oweing money themselfs, i do know that the whole of colways remaining stcok has been sold to one of the large tyre retailers, but unfortunatly i dont think we will be seeing colway or greenway being manufactured again.

Its also not just 4x4's that are hit, colway tyres are used by loads of grasstrack and rally teams, along with supporting and being the base tyre for the Formula 911..  Such a shame really as they were alwas very helpfull to us.

...another Uk company gone to dust  :(

The only alternative now is Insa, who do do some nice patterns, except the supply is bad and they only come in limited sizes..

Found them to be very twitchy in the wet and stearing wonders a bit at motorway speeds. It probably doesn't help that my trailing arm bushes need replacing desperately  :D  :D  :D

What about Maxsport (http://www.maxsport-competition-tyres.co.uk/index.html) - small range of 4x4 stuff but UK remoulder nonetheless. We can always hope and pray they buy some of colways moulds etc.

The company brand names and manufacturing equipment has been now be bought be rival tyre retread company in Poland. Unfortunately no new lease of life for the UK plant as it all being moved to poland. But it might be a hope what we can still get COLWAY MT's and greenway Anaconda in the future.

recent news wire...

New Factory For Colway Production

Following the news that Polish retreader Mark Gum had purchased the retreading equipment and the Colway and Greenway brands, all previously owned by C-Tyres, it has been revealed that the company will build a new factory in Poland to produce the tyres.

Mark Gum's owners, Mariona and George Krzyzagorski, have said that construction of the plant will begin this summer, with some tyres being produced later this year. Full production will come on-stream in the summer of 2009 and the range will include tyres for all sectors; passenger car, 4x4, van, light and heavy truck.

Poland? What is happening to this country? Safety Devices cages are all made in Poland, now Colway tyres

Great to hear the business has been 'saved', but sad to hear it's leaving the UK.

Well I said this years ago, the loondun eye, part of the millenium celebrations and supposed to celebrate what is meant to be british in the new milenium.

The hub was cast in poland, even though the worlds largest castings are made here in Sheffield.  The frame was made abroad, though allegedly using Scunthorpe steel (probably because of the export incentives) and the glass cages were built in France.  The the whole thing was finished late and didn't work properly.

Sound familiar?
