Title: The General Lee sound a like Competition !
Post by: Brian the Sn@il on November 21, 2007, 19:12:48
We it had to be done, and I'm pleased it has.

Operation Straight Through didn't go to plan.

A V8 with a straight through pipe is a bit too loud !

So we added the back box back onto the system.

Not too bad at all, on tick over its nice and deep.
Stick it in D  and off we go, auto changing at 2000 rpm without too much noise, in fact if you have the windows shut, its just a low deep rumble.

Now this is where the fun starts :)

Knock it out of D and into 2nd, Rev higher than 2400 rpm and all hell breaks loose with regards to Noise

Best way i can describe it is The General Lee on full chat, its the V8 Clapping noise difficult to explain, then manual into 3rd keeping the revs high, the noise !! Fantastic.

Stick it back into D it changes to TOP and that's the end of the sound track, back to a rumbling noise again.

So best of both worlds,
Im happy :)

Back box removal was our first option last week, but to be honest only a very small amount of difference.

For a second there, about half way through it sounds a bit like someone yawning rather than a V8

Try these :)

OK I'm fed up with it now, its Too Loud :(

To rub it in there's a American Pick Up truck who lives close to me who must have a V10 under the bonnet, Rumbles past, with such a Low Bass Exhaust, Not Loud, just very Base :)

Its what i want, but how the heck do you make a V8 sound LOW....

I'm thinking of making a Twin pipe exit out the back, with 2 Mufflers.

But have no idea what muffler to go for to produce the LOW Base :)

At the moment on tick over its low and nice as soon as we hit 2500 RPM it Rasps very Loud just like the General Lee !!  Which is fun, but Ive had enough now :( and want the Low Rumble from the Jungle ;)

You need a nice wide pipe I reckon, slow the gas down and give it room to echo a bit.  That might have an effect of power/economy though :?

Whereabouts dod you stick the back-box?  if I'm up to speed you only have the back box on now.

Try a single box system with the mid box from a TDi, that's a straight through box rather than the staggered box on the V8 system.  My sports pipes have straight throughs and this is where most of the gain is.

IIRC the back box is called an attenuator, it's just there to smooth out the note as on it's own does very little.  You need something a bit bigger underneath, I suppose you could try 2 back boxs, one in the middle and one at the back :?

Just make sure you fit a balance pipe between both sides or it will sound awful, not even as good as a 4-pot.

2 pipes throughout the car is ok, as long as you fit a balance pipe between the 2.  You get a smoother note if all 8 go into 1 at some point though, that's why the factory 2 pipe system is 1 piep just behind the engine (3.5 on carbs or early EFi IIRC).

The deep note you seek can be helped with hollywood deeptone mufflers, google it. ive got one but only one im afraid.

As for the balencing pipe, it depends for a smooth burble yes, but for a nasty growl no.

Hi bri, hope your keeping well, I experimented with mine, I tried a straight through pipe, idle sounded awesome anything else sounded poo, plus with no back pressure the power was right down, then I tried a cherry bomb for a center box, sounded gorgeous but a wee bit too loud an raspy about 3,500 rpm,  when plugging through mud you could notice that the torque wasn't quite there, the only way to get the deep burble is with at least a 2.5" system,Morgan centre boxes sound good fitted on a mates disco (even better now the 5.7 Chevy engines fitted  :D )
