i was told today that i should have been born a boy as my interest in cars (i.e landies) isnt normal for a girl!!!!!!!!! my dad thinks its unladylike to want to get under my disco and have a look!!! Y??? :? :? i'm the first to admit i don't know a awful lot about the mechanics but i willing to learn and do try(just ask minty, i try his patience all the time!!!)... is it wrong for a female to show interest in things like this or is my dad just a bit old fashioned????? :? :?

Its your Dad. Get a new one.
-
Lordy  long time since I've heard somehting like that said.
My sister, Range Rover Red is pretty handy with the spanners, though these days she can't be bothered anymore, but she used to help me dismantle my Escort and her Fiesta has been apart in our capable hands.
My wife, The Ant Hill Mob is also pretty handy, just ask Tim who showed him how to do wheelbearings (running joke at one point), As well as Chuggaboom, the TDi, she's has a '74 Capri, in pieces of course.
-
My 14 year old daughter who I will admit has only had me as her role model.Loves Landys was into shooting. She is useless at passing spanners .I think she has blonde moments .I ask for a 7/16th AF and she comes back with a 16mm.But for her first car she wants a VW camper van must be air cooled though.I give her the Da sander she is happy as they come will stand there all day and likes to be shown how to put body filler on.She is insistant that she will go to Langley Farm every year no matter what.
-
My wife is handy with a tool kit, I guess its because she grew up on a farm. I think its nice to see women getting their hands dirty and enjoying their cars.
-
My dad has seen me strip an engine with my husband for rebuilding so he wasn't the slightest bit surprised when he saw me servicing my landy. I think women should at least know the basics. My mother in law knows where things are but you ask her if she has checked her oil recently or checked her coolant and she will just look at you agog
-
i think its mint that a lass loves the same things as us blokes, i would love wor lass to get more into the 4x4 life instead of " i,m not getting in that its dirty!"

Prehistoric it would seem...
Wheelbearings and brakes(specifically the calipers) are the only things on my disco that have gone wrong so far, but i can now strip down and rebuild the caliper and put on a new bearing and swivel!!! oh also replaced ALL brake pipes throughout entire car.... wot a swine of a job.
P.S. does anybody know where this diesel stuff goes????
-
My daughter is just past the grand ripe old age of 1 and she has 2 toys Landies which she'd be lost without. I'm grooming her into a life of Landies, start them early I say
You've just to be with the times when your a dad nowadays and LR's will probably outlive us

You're doing better than me - I would not trust myself with anything to do with brakes, etc.

wish I had a lady that could fix my car, my missus is useless with everything pratical, was fun when we were younger as I could be her hero, but nowdays with a big house and 3 cars and 2 kids it is a total pain in the arse!!!
-

-
i know the feeling too..
dad recenlty asked me why i have the mud club url on the back window of puggy... surely i dont take it off road! to which he got the reply... no, only through the ford!

My dad (a mechanic/panel beater/sprayer) loved the fact I'd get excited when he'd say 'Can't go to the park today, need to change the gearbox' :) my mother on the other hand would frequently ask 'can't you just like barbies?' I was told however, it was extremely un-lady-like to go out in the back of a 90 with my own shotgun (well mine in the way it was my uncles and I used it so it was known as mine... don't think a 10yr old can legally have one lol) and shoot birds/rabits... but I liked it :) Now, being with Ste, I love the fact we have a rangie and before I was pregnant and had our son I loved helping him rebuild it and I'm the first one to be up for going offroading and doing other un-lady-like activities  I think its very strange of people who think something is strictly for one sex? To look at me I don't think you'd think I was someone who could weld (ok tack stuff up) but then again people who look at me now seem to think I'm a scummy sinlge mum with no brains and who had a child for the sake of a council hose, never mind I'm actually an accountant (sorry went off on a tangent there) but it does quite annoy me that people judge and catagorize so much, surely the world would be a boring place if we all followed the same path? :)

When my other half,Beki, left school, she got a job working for the British Hovercraft Corporation, based in East Cowes, here on the Isle of Wight.
Not as an 'Office Girl' but as a Technician Apprentice - did a B.Tec / HTC in mechanical and production engineering - a full 4 year apprenticeship, with day-release at our local tech. college
In the third year she was runner-up in the Technical Directors Cup (at B.H.C.) and in the final year, won the Technical Directors Cup at BHC, and also won the overall Technical Directors Cup from Westland Aerospace in Yeovil.
She also learned to weld - she and her mum(!) replaced the rotten boot floor in an old Mk5 cortina, and a few years ago gave me a hand to swap a 2oo tdi into my off-roader.
She also bought, and fitted, an X-9 winch to her other motor, and on odd occasions, has been known to enter a couple of challenge events and not do too badly either!

No there are Numerous Female Mechanics that i know,
you should be happy with the achievements
and i applaude you for it
when i was an Apprentice Mechanic we got another Apprentice and all the 'Older' mechanics where saying she should not be in the workshop / garage as it was a 'MALE ONLY ENVIRONMENT' which i Completly dissagreed with especially as she is Still working there and is fully Qualified and most of them are gone and were less Qualified than her
