Having just (severely) bent my track rod I decided to invest in a pair of sumo bars 8)
I contacted Ian Sykes by email to which he promptly replied and ordered the pair for £87 delivered on Monday evening, they arrived with me this morning so well pleased.
I've already started to fit and I must say, they are a substantial piece of kit.
I'll get some piccies tomorrow.
Has anyone elso got them fitted??
-
funny enough mine arrived today from mail order4x4

IIRC the only place to buy genuine Genuine "sumo" bars is from ian sykes,
other ones are just copies
-
i get the feeling mine are gonna be good enough for what i wan them for :?

There are licenced outlets, see here

Thing is though, with free postage from mail order 4x4, they work out at just over £85. but the genuine items from Ian are £87. delivered!
-
:? .... but a straight bar is the same as the next straight bar if made from the same steel aint it .....its just brand names and the price you pay surely????

They look like Britpart versions to me
If so the bars are great but there's been some bad talk regarding the track rod ends.
With that in mind, just keep your eye on them for wear

the only bad thing i heard about them was that due to the increased strength of the bars the next weakest part was the track rod end.
you can drive with a bent steering arm, but not a snapped TRend.
I have the sumo bars on mine - a very worthwhile investment!
-
whats the best deal you guys found for the pair? im about to order mine. just to make double sure (yes i already asked this, but i cant rick the gamble), the bar behind the axle is exactly the same as the bar closest to the front? right? lol
..ooo and i already have the one right at the front, and used it a little bit against stumps etc. they are very impressive! 8)

Yeh, your probably right but the price difference is only £2.00 If it was £20.00 then I would go for the cheaper version, but for £2.00!
Chances are they are the same, but as a small point, I'd rather give my money to Ian for the originals that a large company that have bought them in from britpart or sum such.

Its the same construction, but a fair bit longer!
Ian sent me this
Thank you for your interest in Sumo bars
Our bars don’t have clamps, we use lock nuts which come with the bars.
As yours is a 200 Disco I need to know what length the front drag link bar is.
Either 760 or 835, easily recognized. The 835 has two Track rod end ball joints, the 760 has one, at the wheel end and the steering drop arm has a ball NOT the bar, the bar has a swan neck piece with a hole in it for the ball’s taper.
Prices is £95 inclusive of TNT delivery (next day) and vat. By mail would be £8.00 cheaper.
I can accept visa/ mastercard but not switch.
Give me a call one evening, (he did supply a number but I felt I shouldn't post it here)
Thanks again
Ian Sykes

Please excuse my ignorance, but do you still run a steering damper with these bars ?

Yes
You should be supplied with a clamp on bracket for your damper.

i heard that due to the weight of the bars it meant that the damper may not be required.
this could had been an old wives tale though

its not a wives tale....i know 2 disco's that are running without dampers  .......but it doesnt always have that effect on all....just hoping mine doesnt need the damper......at 22kg im sure it will take out most of it
-
ive been running the bars form mail order4x4 for over a year now, no damper fitted, fells fine on the road, much more responsive than with a damper

you is right mate    now i said this before you
-
something wierd goin on in this thread!
-
I was going to make up a new bracket for my damper as I wrecked it getting it off (I have the relocation kit from Wizard) Might try it without 1st see how it goes??
-
Here are some pics of mine, you'll notice in one of them (hopefully the 1st if I do this right) just how badly I bent the track rod
-
I've had a pair of these for a year now and not got round to fitting them
-
well i can 100% confirm that is NOT a old wives tale about fitting HD steerings means you can do without your damper.
i had mine fitted to day and its as smooth as anything without the damper on. no kicking with bumps etc.
-
What tyres have you got on?
Any lift? what are your swivles like?
All these things will effect bump-steer and wheel shimmy, I know people who don't have steering dampers on failry standard cars. I know other cars that need H/D steering dampers, mine included.
That said the roads round here are shocking and that's probably a big part of it.
Anyway, does it drive any nicer with the damper removed?
-
this v8 disco is new to me. at the moment she is running 235/85/16 bfg at's but will soo move over to the same size mud tyres.
the roads around here are not much different to anywhere else....i did try a few roads today that would make any truck bounce and kick and it was smooth. if im honest there is no noticable difference between with or without the damper which in my eyes is te best possile result..... just one less thing to break again
-
Cool, might try to sumon the energy to fit mine then. I fitted a Defender damper and I get a wheel shake on RH turns from the RH wheel, annoying but not severe. At one point I refitted the RR one as well
-

eeer... today i just got delivered the sumo track rod, and pro comp damper. waiting for QT to finish off the bracket. so... the damper wont make much difference? :( (oh well, i got a pro comp sticker now! :D 8) )
-
Hmm
Expensive sticker eh ?
