Title: Time for some more lights
Post by: Jimbo on October 08, 2007, 18:55:54
Now that I've got my new winch bumper, I thought it time to improve the lighting - I'm a little restricted on space below the A bar (as the winch is a bit hooge), but I think lamps mounted above the A bar might look a bit naff........thoughts ?

The lamp mounting brackets on the A bar are at each end of the Defender badge on the grill. I've got a pair of Hella somethings in the garage (small, oval shaped 55w jobbies), and they would fit below the A bar.......or do I go for a monster pair of 8" somethings and mount them on top of the bar ?

Mark Evens mounted his above in "A 4X4 is Born"

Looks good. I suppose it will depend in size and shape.

Good point - guess I'll have to watch the DVD again !!

I was thinking that lights above the bar might be a bit vulnerable, but then if they're going to get broke it probably doesn't matter where they are mounted

They should be okay. If there not your windscreen is ot far behind!

Also putting them intop they will have less chance of being drowned in water.

The Hella's will be just fine, in fact I now run these on my A-bar instead of the old Wipac 8-inch 100W units and I find the Hella's are better illuminators despite being a lot smaller and 'only' 55W.

If they are FF50's you may find them a tad too small, I run these on my bike but on a LR they may look too small (still effective though). The FF100's are an excelent light while giving good penetration & spread. I have a pair of spots on the underside of the A-bar and a pair of fogs on the top of the bumper (all linked up to high-beam). The spots provide penetration and the fogs provide an excelent spread of light across the carriageway.

Of course another upside is that they match the Land-Rover oval!

Just looked in the garage - they are indeed FF50's.

I might do a trial run and see what they look like, before wiring them in......feel a need for some more lights coming on - how about the 50's above the A bar, and get pair of 100's for below !

Hmm, too wet to fit the lamps, so doing a spot of browsing - seems you can only get FF100's in 'Ivory'.........yet the 50's and 75's come in black  :?

You could always resprey them. A set of 4 ff50's would look good and be bright enough. I have 4 forward facing and two to the side.

I could.......but then I could just buy another pair of 50's - in black !

Doesn't the price vary from place to place   , I've found one website who are ten quid cheaper per lamp than another site !, they seem to price per lamp for some odd reason, you get a slightly better deal buying in pairs.

Have to admit I think huge spots above the A Bar just make it look like you've run over Mickey Mouse :)

A big spare of rectangular things above the A bar would look ok.

The best place for Hella's is AB Butt in Leicester.
Apart from mail-order, they do several of the LR shows and are very knowlegable about the lights they sell, they are also about the cheapest you will find.

I got the current pair of FF50's from them at a show a couple of years ago - they were destined for the Disco, but never made it
