Dear all,
Have had a 300tdi (Disco) for a while and it has been supurb with cheap parts etc.
Looking at a td5 but...
The wheel bearings are £250 each!!! I used to have to change mine each year due to deep water fording.
The suspension is air, how do you raise that!
Someone out there must know if you can run a td5 off road for reasonabl emoney but from what i have seen, you cant!
-
dont do it!!!
-
Can't comment on the wheel bearings - my Disco has done just over 95000 miles, has had some fairly reasonable abuse, and is still on original bearings.
Not all Td5's have rear air sus - only those with the 'SLS' (self-levelling suspension) option (factory fit on XS and ES models, optional on lower specs). Some peeps have binned the air and converted back to coils -and then stuck a lift in, others have found ways to lift Td5's and keep the air.
-
I know of at least two members (Hightower + Jas278) that use Discovery TD5's off road. Both are lifted and modified but as for costs - you'd have to ask 'em
-
..and you can use air offroad with no problems at all!!!! I have no choice :)
-
OOH.........cost of parts , yes a little pricey for the TD5 as with all new Landrover products ! I have replaced 1 wheel brg cost me £172.00 but I am in the trade , as pointed out , the air suspension is fine off road ,or you could convert back to coils, I chose my motor purposely with no Air suspension and no Ace , if youre serious about a TD5 do the same ,all the goodies are becoming available now , Bumpers bash plates ect . My does get well used offroad and it performs aswell as 200 and 300 s , The hill decent and traction control are added cheaty buttons but are nice when the need to use them occurs ,Youre only here once GO FOR IT>>

:D I just press the button on the dash...you can also buy air spring spacers
I've just 'converted' our TD5 to an 'off roader'. Heavy duty RRC springs have gone on the front, along with a Bearmach winch bumper and winch, BFG muds and tree sliders. Snorkel and more protection on the way. :)

The air suspension is pretty problem free.
You can lift them by recalibrating the sensors, putting spacers in the springs as well, or putting spacers in the springs AND sensors. It's a very easy job.
Discoparts sell all the bits you need. There's not much point in changing from air to coils as the air works well on the Disco.

Having had a 300Tdi 90 CSW for some years, followed by a brief interlude with a Jeep Cherokee, I bought a Disco TD5 a few months back and have off roaded it a number of times now. It's totally unmodified at the moment (apart from Mud Club stickers and CB radio :) ) and on road tires. However, it ain't been stuck yet - I've been very impressed by its off road ability in standard form, the traction control is very effective and the rear end on mine, with air suspension, can lift a couple of inches at the push of a button.
As for costs, in the time I have had it its been serviced, needed a recon sterring box and now the starter motor needs fixing....
But I am very happy with it and am saving up for lift, rock sliders, etc.
Cheers,
Nick

Disco TD5 ES. Got the lot air, sls ace, etc. etc............... Plus a bit more
Two inch lift. Air spring spacers’ rear and scrap iron racing spring’s front.
Had Koni heavytrack but they are not long enough so moved up (down, sideways) to OME +2inch.
ARB front winch bumper (also known as the plough!!!), Southdown steering guard, QT heavy duty track rod and drag link. OME steering damper.
QT front and rear diff guards, Southdown tank guard with demountable towing system and recovery points.
Devon 4x4 D44 side exit exhaust and D44 HD rear bumper
Ditched the 18 inch AT2's for 265/75 16 BFG MT
D44 light bar with 4x piaa spots plus bi xenon headlights and xenon spots mounted on ARB
With a little engine work giving around 210bhp, if I can't get over it, I push through
Nothing wrong with Disco 2's. Parts can be hard to find for lift, dislocation etc. but Devon have there own D2 so do a lot more.
I'm working on a way to dislocate the whole lot but not sure if dampers are up to an extra two - four inch droop. Could this be the fifth set in as many months
anybody want D2 dampers!!!!
