Title: Starting problems
Post by: TechnoTurkey on October 01, 2007, 09:10:24
This one is driving me mad and forcing me to pull my hair out (what little I have left anyway!).

I need to sell my S3 at the moment as I need the cash, before I do this I want to get it MOT'd really.

It's in good nick and should pass no problem, but I can't get the thing to start on a regular basis.

Basically the starter just turns very slowly and sounds strained.  I have replaced the starter and it's no better.  Its not the battery AFAIK as its the same when jumping it.  I've done the obvious like checking all the leads and earths etc, also replaced the solenoid.

Any advice?  Really need to sort this so I can sell it.

Thanks

Have you tried running a jump lead directly to the starter?

What happens then?

i agree with bowie, try this first, if it is still te same i would say it is an earth problem.

Also check the state of the cable from the battery to the solenoid and down to the starter, and the connections including the switching cable

Try getting a length of cable from the battery pos straight to the switching terminal on the solenoid

Also if you can do it without arc welding a jump lead directly from the battery pos to the solenoid cable out to the starter, and then straight onto the starter end itself (I find a great long screwdriver best for this type of work with the jump lead clamped to it  )

Thanks everyone - I'm going to follow the earth route a bit further and may add a couple more straps here and there to see if it will help.

Had a similar problem with a new starter a while ago untill i took the paint off round the bolt holes (also where the earth straps fit)
