Post by: Brian the Sn@il on September 17, 2007, 17:12:39
£ 275 it cost me

ITs a Diesel
Its a 1978

It Runs
Goes Forward
Goes Backwards

No MOT and no TAX.

Whats the best thing to do ?

Break it ?
Repair it leave it standard and stick a MOT on it and resell.
IS it a good base for a off road project ?

personally i would do it up to its origonal standard but on a budget, see how little i could spend on it,then get an MOT , basically because it would be a nice project. you would get a fair bit of money from breaking it, if you have the space to keep it for a while, although i think it is ashame to see a series motor wasted like that. down to personal choice realy.

Worth more than £275 to anyone interested in a project, and would be nice as an unmolested restoration.

On the other hand, given the spare cash I would have had the FWH's, truck cab, Ifor Williams truckback off you..................an easy £275 before wheels, engine, etc, start to come off.

May cost you more than £275 to get an MOT though? Then as an offroad toy, even more........so I unless it's down to finances, as usual

It looks fairly straight to me, I'd MOT it and keep it as a tidy little run around, probably wouldnt mod it or break it personally.

Flog the Ifor Williams and see if that will pay for the MOT.....

Ain't worth a huge amount in bits to be honest, series owners don't pay much for spares (swops and deals generally).  Also wouldn't expect to turn a huge profit on resale as series 3's are common as muck.  Get it on the road and have some fun and see if you get on with it, they are good offroad but are an aquired taste.

Having just got my series 3 off ebay...

The non taxed MOT stuff seemed to go for under £500 and frequently diddnt sell or meet reserve if the owners tried to big-it-up but still not MOT.

The similar looking but Taxd and MOTd went for say £500 to £800, typically £750 in the local papers.

One problem whit non MOT landies is that you need a very big car to tow them away with, I started off thinking a non MOT just like your one would be ideal, then was surprised to find that even my Freelander couldnt be up to towing it with a Heavy Duty trailer. Thefore not being able to drive it away is a big deal for many would-be buyers even if they want a project.

Like someone said, MOT  it and get it going for as little as possible, parts a SO cheap and simple to swap so as long as you dont need it to work every day and have the space to keep it (covered so then it wont rust) then enjoy it.

IT Trailers nicely, picked it up with my D40 Nav.

I really appreciate everyone's input on this one, its great to have so many different ideas.

My major problem with it, is the lack of Power steering, it would be a major disability when offroading in a confined space.
So if we decide to use it for off road, power steering would have to on.

Looking underneath there's already been some welding done, we are next door to a MOT station ( behind the green fence ! ) so might pop it over next door for a pre test to see what it will require.

Do many off road places require you to have MOT ?

as i might just Trailer it to events if i decide to make it into a off road monster.

Sorry for so many silly questions, but this Landy thing is new to me.
