Title: Window control unit
Post by: Benji on December 31, 2004, 10:48:50
My 2 rear windows don't work!  They have been a bit dodgy for months now.

I read somewhere along time ago that the control unit behind the glove box is at fault but instead of replacing it, its possible to re-solder the broken connection.

Has anyone had any experience of this?

Ben

Hi Benji.

I don't know about the rear control box but I have heard of the rear isolator switch jamming or not connecting. It is worth removing the switch panel and cleaning the units, if you can find your way around a wiring diagram you could bypass the isolate switch, or try a spare that you know to work from a donor vehicle.

I'm refering to the 300 series here, not sure what you have but hope this helps.

Good luck.

I think all cars have a rear isolator switch and it may be a legal requirement.  If both rear windows don't work this could be the culprit but check the fuses also, on some models there is one fuse for the fronts and another for the rears.

Is the isolator behind the switch panel in the centre console?

They didn't suddenly stop working, its been gradual and sometimes they will work after a few mins so i don't think its the fuse.

The isolator is under the other switches on the centre console.

Now, try oiling the windows with WD40, if they've gradually got worse the chances are they're sticking.  One of my windows got so bad it would only go up from right at the bottom if the engine was running!
Spray the oil into the rubber tracks and leave for a while.
Alternatively, check that fuse is clean and dry!
