Title: V8 into a series 2 lightweight??
Post by: tjsj on August 06, 2007, 14:05:00
I have a series 2 lightweight with a 2.25 petrol engine in it. The head gasket has blown along with a couple of other things going wrong, and I was wondering how hard it would be to put a 3.5 V8 into it? I would like to keep the series 2 gearbox for now so would i need conversion plates etc?

Seen it done, go on you know you want to :D

Presumably there wil be some cutting to do so why not fit a permenant 4wd system at the same time?

Personally I'd go auto too, I've got really lazy recently.

Them front drive shafts are no good on open road in 4wd, only have u/j's in series

The actual fitment is not too hard from what I've seen and heard (never actually done oen though)

I had  a 2a l/w briefly well modded though, and the body had been raised 2" as well so everything was just that bit different, that was a v8 though

To actualy do a v8 is much the same as on a standard s2a, so have a trawl round the sites about that, you will find it more common

think you need to put defender front end on, as weve done a couple winch bumpers, and another just been ordered for a series with v8's in, and all have the defender front panels, bonnets etc, i guess to make a bit more space.
would of though a v8 would trash a standard petrol gearbox, not sure, but seems a bit of a beast for a stock petrol box.

The gearbox would probably be OK if it's still a Series 2 gearbox with no syncro 1st & 2nd, if it's an all synchro box, then they're a bit weaker. I'm sure there's info on here about this, I've definitely seen the question about the conversion before, and it's definitely been done and done.

if ur going to go that far, why not put a rangie axle on and have the pas outta there too.

or just but a rangie running chassis with auto box, and put a series body on top

the series 2(a) lightweight is a rare car, why go hacking it up just for a V8, get a S3 lightweight to put the V8 in and keep the 2(a) as standard.

My friend has one in a s2a down the unit, with a milner conversion kit, onto a series box, its had the bulkhead modified to fit, but looks original round the front end though

I'll take the camera down today to get you a few snaps

I think this will be up for sale, but I dont know any details on it at the mo

Putt a 3.5 rover on carbs in series 3 got engine brackets and front down pipes from steve parker already had adapter plate on engine, had to cut a small section out of passenger footwell  used the exhaust manifolds and air cleaner that came with engine it was out of early rr. Used rad from series but had to put electric  fan the bigger the better.Used series box it goes and sounds great i put parabolic springs and pro comp dampers these are a bit stiff but otherwise well pleased.
