Title: Truck Photo Required Please.
Post by: Bush Tucker Man on December 23, 2004, 00:43:31
Has anyone out there got a good clear image of a Scania T-series?

I'm after one for my 'WebShots'.
I've seen quite a few over the past couple of months, but they're usually on the Motorways & inevitably travelling in the opposite direction.

I'd prefer an 'on the road' shot, it has to be a tractor unit, not a rigid.
Is that being too choosy?
Obviously You'd have to be willing to let me use it

Thanks, I'll have a browse of those later.

Saw another one this morning (on tanker duty) between jct 30 & 31 eastbound on the M62. Sadly I was heading west.

This is getting daft!

Earlier this afternoon I had a drive across to FerryBridge Services (A1/M62 interchange) to look for a 'T' in the truck park.

Couldn't see one, but as I was waiting to join the roundabout to head back up to the M62, guess what went past & shot off down the A1 southbound?
.
.
.
.
It was a white 4x2 tractor-unit going solo

That's a nice rigid.

There's a haulage company in Wakefield (near the M1 at jct39) with a gorgeous restored N10 tractor-unit, but it's kept under cover & out of sight (until 'show season' starts)

Might have to go & hunt it out

Just remembered.
There's a Scania main agent about 2miles away on the industrial estate down near the M62 (jct 31)
It might be a good place to go looking.

Must be one of the best looking trucks in the country.
Barring some of the privately imported Kenworths & Peterbilts.

Well I was lucky with that one.
I was on the A1 (as I stated with the picture) & I saw it from a distance in a lay-by.
Quite by chance there was a layby opposite, so in I went.
Pulled my 'Hi-Viz' coat out of the back & slipped it on & went to take the picture.

Still, it's not too much fun wandering up the side of the A1 even for only 50yards, even on the other side of the armco.

Missed a 6x4 artic with a tanker on Tuesday on WoodHead Pass(A628). I'd seen it coming & set off running in the snow to get into a good position, as it was climbing up the drag towards the summit.
Just as it drew into shot, another artic came the other way.....

Why don't you have a ride up to Birstall, theres a Volvo dealer there who may have an N series tractor unit in.
Crossroads Commercials on Pheasant drive( other side of road to Pheasant pub) & lower down the road is an independant Land Rover guy
(4x41 in the old mill) on same side of Huddersfield Rd

Here's another couple for you from my model collection
If you are ever in Glossop around teatime there is always 2 or 3 Tinnellys come through Glossop from Snake Pass, sometimes a T-Bar.
From Salters Brook Bridge drop down the valley and take the B6105 on the left at Crowden, only a couple of miles into town centre :D

Crossroads used to be Iveco & (before that Atkinson, I think)

The '4x41' used to be up at East Ardsley behind the butchers shop near the old transport cafe (now Chinese takeaway)

Andy, I knnw that road very well, it used to be on one of my cycling routes;
Wakefield, Denby Dale, New Mills, Holmfirth, Holme-Moss, Glossop, Snake Pass, LadyBower, Strines (http://community.webshots.com/photo/156662918/157980095OASruy) & Penistone.

But I'll keep my eyes open when I'm down there anyway
About a 75/80miles round trip (door to door) & about 5hours, not counting dinner/pot of tea en-route

No Crossroads has always been Volvo, Northern Commercials & Archbolds
were Iveco, many moons ago I used to work for a firm that had a Fiat Daily LWB van, that was an absolute heap(lovingly known as the Filthy Fiat) it went to Archbolds for the MOT, it was so bad they hid it round the back  !!!!

Is it still there??

I didn't realist till I went to ARCO the other day that Bridge Garage has another Peterbilt 'Wrecker' (http://community.webshots.com/photo/173144322/184380865cytKGc) that's in bits.
It's hidden away behind the others (you can just see the roof by the ERF at the left hand edge of frame)

Thanks Andy, funnily enough I actually saw that one yesterday in Dewsbury, it's got a radiator cover with Glossop Motors on it (or a painted grill?)
By the time I'd manged to turn around it had disappeared
Nice looking rig!

'Muky' thanks for those, the wrecker looks very familiar, someone else went to the same show??

That'd be S Harrison Ltd.  They still run several Scamell Highwayman artics, plus a sixties Foden and a few other interesting trucks, many of which are my age.  They have a couple of Highwaymans converted to 42Tonnes, triple axles and all, frightening concept.
The family are famous, or should that be infamous, amongst local transport enthusiasts and his trucks have often been painted by local artist K Hudson, before is ilness.

One of their contracts was with local steel company KPS so I used to see the Highwayman on my way to work.

I've done the 'great north road' a couple of times myself, from London up to Newcastle on account of my best mate at Uni living there.  Fantastic road, especiallly when you're a young man and think nothing of driving all night.

When we took the BWSOW up to Berwick-upon-Tweed, I was very surprised how the traffic seemed to almost melt awayto the north of Newcastle.
Once Morpeth is reached it's like a good country road, with lots of recognisable features like pubs & houses that would have been involved with the coaching trade

I agree, especially if you can follow/figure out the old alignment & the pre-bypasses/route alteration sections.
Occasionally the route goes through town centres & gets awkward.
Don't forget that pre-mid 1700's it was differant again, then the 'Turnpikes' really came into being & the roads improved.

The old road over Shap (the A6) is another superb route, it was the main route up the west coast to Scotland pre-M6.

I could continue, but it would be hi-jacking my own thread & it requires a new topic, perhaps a 'Favourite Roads' thread?
Any takers for that?

The A6 over Shap, arn't the fields to either side still littered with the rusting remains of many heavy goods vehicles that went a little too fast?

There used to be, but I think they've been 'cleaned up' a bit.

There's a great little book (http://www.gingerfold.com/transport_archive_series.htm) about this route, it's very informative (got a copy downstairs in my 'Snug')
There's also a video (http://www.classic-tractors.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Trucks_and_Road_Transport_49.html) (some nice videos there. ie; 'Scamell Recovery' :D

I wanted to 'do' Shap whilst we were up at Windermere but the closest I got was Kendal (http://community.webshots.com/photo/308675187/308987783XfdUCU), the old route of the A6 through the centre is now probably the quiestest it's ever been

Got one this morning :D

A friend of mine (the one with the Mines Rescue Atkinson) had told me about a haulage company who's boss had bought an Atkinson my mate wanted.
Anyway, it turns out that they run a T-Series, so I nipped over that way on my little 'laning' trip this morning & it was parked up.

Silly morning yesterday for the T-Series.
1. Spotted east-bound on M62 between jct 30 & 31. I was heading west. Tanker
2. Garforth. A63 (Leeds), & it was a STGO 6x4 tractor unit with a low-loader & large 360 excavator

3. Wakefield. Chantry Bridge. 4x2 tractor-unit. Tipper trailer

Every time it would have been far too awkward to even 'grab' a shot

Oh well, have to wait for 'TruckEast' (http://www.theeventsoffice.co.uk/pages/truckeast.html)
Ought to be plenty of scope there :D

Yes Please

I saw a white T-Series yesterday. It had Severn-Trent Water decals on the doors (out of its area??) & hitched to a 'Biffa Waste' tanker.
It was a 6x2 (rear lift-axle)
Must've been empty as it set off from the lights like crazy

'Rolling Thunder'

Very nice photos, but the ERF(?) with the shunting locomotive also looks like a Hotel at Morecambe down at the southern end of town
