Hi guys, a mate of mine wants to get his first landie :D
It's a 1998 R-reg
2.0 DI Hardback
Manual
Diesel
With 83k on the clock.
Did the 98 have any problems...gearbox ect?
Any info would be great.
Thanks
Brendan.

Early diesels are relatively rare. So can hold a higher price than the petrol versions. The motor is not great, but will slog away forever.
Look for rot in the boot under the lockable cover.
At 83k, you shouldn't see any major problems apart from routine wear and tear. Check the VC works properly. If you get excessive 'scrabbling' on full lock, it may be faulty. All of them seem to do it a bit, but if it feels like it really doesn't want to go round, it could be a problem.
Not aware of any issues with the gearbox, but others may be able to advise on this.
Some of the switchgear seems to be a problem on earlier models. Check everything works.
Rear door glass mechanisms can fail. Check the glass goes up and down OK (should drop about 1" when you open the door).

L series diesel is a good old slogger and with regular oil and belt changes will go on for ever.
Check when cam belt replaced
Check rear prop is still fitted.
Check VCU has not seized/failed.
Check all windows, front and back, go up and down.
Check rear boot "cupboard" isn't wet.
Check rear tyres for excessive wear. (links to VCU probs)
Check for any damage from rare off road use.
Then get out and get it muddy!!!

The wife's Freebie suffers this occasionally :( Any idea where the water gets in?

Rear seals
There are a few landrover tech bulletins on it:
here (http://www.myfreelander.com/bodyprobs31.htm) is one of them (most popular problem)

Cheers George, I'll have a look at the seal and see if it's getting in there.
