This may help 265/50R15 means 265=width of the tyre, 50=height of sidewall & R15=size of the wheel. 31/10.5 15 means 31=31" across the hole wheel & tyre, 10.5=the width of the tyre & R15 is the wheel size all the sizes are in inches not mm :D

31 -10.5 - 15 = 265/75 approx
31 - 10.5 - 16 = 265/65 approx
These are only approx - to the nearest metric size

This may help 265/50R15 means 265=width of the tyre, 50=height of sidewall & R15=size of the wheel. 31/10.5 15 means 31=31" across the hole wheel & tyre, 10.5=the width of the tyre & R15 is the wheel size all the sizes are in inches not mm :D
Slight ammendments...
The 50 in 265/50r15 is the % height of the sidewall. The sidewall in the above example is 50% of the tyres width (265*50%=132.5mm height side walls)
The R designates that the tyre is radial ply construction, as apposed to bias ply or cross ply.
