Title: Flash flooding
Post by: laser_jock99 on June 14, 2007, 23:16:30
Spent most of the evening pulling cars (six including a Discovery) from the local flash flooding here in Leamington after three hours of torrential rain. Best one was a guy in a Fiesta with a brand new plasma telly in the back- "get me towed outa here quick. I'm not bothered about the car but the water's nearly reached the flippin telly!"

My uncles ground floor on his house is ruined- and all his prize koi carp are gone.....

Unless you end up beached in a car park!

The roads into work were a bit caotic this morning - there's one or tow car that don't wanna be movin' - but I hadn't realised quite how bad it'd been elsewhere in the county.

Cheers

Not as bad here, but flooded arounf Meadowhall shopping centre.
An astra and a Focus sitting in water over the top of their tyres blocking the road, what were they thinking? I stuck it in low box to go thru, it must have been 18 inches deep for 75 yards, makes you wonder what goes thru peoples minds as they plow their 56 plate focus into water you could forseably float a boat in................

I bet it was a company car.
Nobody in their right mind would take their own motor into that.... unless it was an insurance scam.

Where abouts is that road ? I live at Chapeltown and it's been quite bad around here too

those floods look deep. I wish I had gone flod hunting now :-( I live near Daventry so should have been some floods around.

I went ford hunting at the weekend though with 2 mates around north west Derby, Mattlock, Belper area. I thought afterall the rain they were going to be fun. Nope. all were about 0.5ft deep. Only just got the wheels wet!

It was about 6 inches over the bonnet.
The orange van moved in the bow wave.

Mick I saw that on the BBC website, but didn't go over

However I did go up Barnsdale Road on Friday evening as I'd heard that the road to Fairburn (Newton Lane) was still flooded between Lin Dyke car-park & Ledston Mill Lane (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=443000.999998173&Y=427500.94730122&width=700&height=400&gride=443099.999998173&gridn=427699.94730122&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=grid&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&keepicon=true&zm=1&scale=25000)

So you have to try don't you...
However I'll admit to reversing out when it got within half-an-inch of the door seals (& I hadn't even got half-way)

I didn't fancy having to possibly take all the carpet out & explain to SWMBO why I was doing, especially as I didn't really need to go through

It still is. Drove it the other night. Reckon just over my sills on a lifted Maverick, didn't stop to find out, not sure the seals are that good and its a petrol so didn't want to temp fate.

It's only the bit on the corner thats flooded, the main straight to Fairburn is now dry, bet it was a sight in full flood.

As for Barnsdale road, do you know which house got people trapped in it? As far as I can think theres only the car dealer along there and he got all the cars out and up to Nordans, so how anyone can get trapped is beyond me. Other thing is thats flooded deliberately to save Cas. Theres a low point on the Levee just after the Boat (its a pub for those that don't know it) that was put in for that reason, didn't raise the road to stop it getting blocked at the same time though.

Yes, it was on Friday evening, as I went round through Ledston to go & have a look (that's the reason why the RSPB building at the Ings is on legs)
One of our Nurses lives in one of the houses/conversions on that bad corner & I was worried that she'd either be trapped at home (or not able to get home) if it had flooded by the RSPB building too

Sorry, no I don't. I presume you mean the one where an Air-Sea Rescue helicopter was supposedly called.
I know as much as you & heard it on 'Look North', or 'Calendar'

I do indeed know The Boat, & used to eat there a couple of times a month when Brian Lockwood was the landlord.

I'll bet it was a bit dire around Ulleskelfe as well??

Just been back down there, will stick a photo up later. Lot less water in it now, didn't get a bow wave, so I assume its below the body work. was quite a sizeable one last time spreading out over the flooded fields alongside. Was down on Thursday night before so I guess its had plenty of time to dissipate.

Title: Packington Ford
Post by: zulublue on June 25, 2007, 02:17:26
Done Packington Ford today (Sunday), took the Mrs for her first run due to her being pregnant for the last 9 months, now the sprogs here thought I would show her what its all about, when we got there she said oh my god it looks deep, I said no its ok been through here loads, so entered the ford the water reached the top of the bonnet within 20ft, oh shucks I thought this is deeper than I expected this could be fun, I was already thinking of how to tell her to get out release the winch cable, blah blah blah, it ended up half way up and over my bonnet, I must admit I thought a V8 in this has got no chance, but we made it with about 6" of water in the car, the guy from the corner house came out to see if we were OK which was nice of him, bet he gets this every week. so then the return leg which went well, so if your planning a dip over the next few days, make sure you have a snorkel and some good MT's on and a bit of luck. Just wish I had taken my camera with me. gutted.

P.S. its raining again as we speak :D  :?

No floods around here. I went to Folkestone for the weekend to visit mates and they had a few floods but all were passable with a clio size car. :(

I want deep water to paddle in!!

It does amaze me though that the rain has brought missery to some peoples lives from flooding but to others (mainly 4x4 people) it has brought fun and the chance to help others who have been stuck in floods. who said 4x4 owners and 4x4's are no good to the country!!

If anyone knows a nice flood around Daventry / banbury way let me know please :D I will go and sit with me tow rope!

We've had 48L/square M of rain in the last 12 hours. No idea what that is in inches. Feels like November

I towed my caravan back in the rain yesterday too. It was like a stream the whole way up the a2, m2, m25, m40. 4.5 hours driving in the rain. I wouldn't class it as the worst drive ever though. I think the bfg at's helped alot to displace the water.

I said to the guys at work this morning it feels like November. I hope the rain goes away soon. I want some warm weather for me holiday in 2 weeks time!

I drove this road (who says you don't need a 4X4 for the school run).
It was about 6 inches over the bonnet.

Mick I saw that on the BBC website, but didn't go over

Richard, I went through Friday in my Vitara but I must admit I was getting a bit worried when it started lapping over the bonnet, only just made it through.

Well, this was the River Aire off the Lock Lane bridge at about 14:00 this afternoon

To my shame I don't possess a 'before' image
I had to find one, so here's a 1960 postcard (http://www.knottingley.org/gallery/localimages/local_historical003.htm) of the weir behind Allinsons Flour Mill

We've been done tonight after taking 2&half hours to get home.
Barnsdale road this is at least 2 ft deeper than last Friday:
On the road from Fairburn to Ledsham we found a funny Irish guy in 4ft of water.  I waded in as at the time I had no idea just how deep it was.
I persuaded him that we couldn't get the Mitsubishi out that night.

When I walked in my Land Rover was NOT in the water when we returned it had reached the back wheels and my riggers were starting to get wet.

We brought him home, warmed him up and gave him a cuppa.

Well, I've not been in to work today, set off at 8ish, took us an hour and a half to do a few miles, so turned around in disgust and set off home again.  All got released from work early yesterday, as one of the guys I work with, his missus works for the council, so we had advance warning of the roads being closed.  I work in sheffield, at the bottom of the parkway, by the canal, thank goodness, and not the river.  Took an hour and a half to get to work yesterday, and nearly 2 hours to go home again.  The place where I work is literally 5 minutes walk from the Wicker, where one of the chaps died yesterday after being swept away.  You don't notice how many water courses you pass when going to work, until they decide to burst their banks and use your road as a short cut.  So having an enforced day off, watching all of the news helicopters coming and going, as I live slap bang between Sheffield and the dam at Ulley.  Been over the bridge there loads of times, looks like its mostly underwater now (you can just about see the parapet).   Hope they can shore it up and make safe, as the motorway closure is causing chaos - the motorway has several bridges over the river rother flood plain, if the dam is breached, these may well get swept away.

Hope all mud-clubbers in the area are OK, and making the most of the puddles, not having to clear up the mess left by the flood.

I'm just glad RRB and I live on top of a hill, seriously thinking we should've invested in a boat rather than a caravan, though!!!

PS, Hope they're keeping the dambusters squadron well away from Ulley, I keep hearing jets (fighters, though, not bombers!) going overhead, so even the RAF has gone to rubberneck.....

Be a bit a cautious of 'playing' in the usual fords in these conditions. Some poor bloke got swept away at the ford near Pershore.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/hereford/worcs/6243484.stm

Normaly it's only inches deep but venturing into 5 feet of water isn't wise.

We were on our way to a job yesterday and came to a local ford, saw a freebie go through no problem so we went for it! Not good when you are in a Astra!  The water was about 2 feet, the car made it through Just with a bow wave over the window

To be honest I think it surfed the first 10 feet!

Well we got out just as it died, but Luckily we managed to get it going again after a while with out having to call our control

When we got back we did have a good laugh. Sometimes the blue lights and excitement just get the better of you!

its not normally a ford!
i been down there again today and now the road is open but with about a foot of water at the deepest part.
its no where near the river and is only flooded cos the drains are blocked, so theres no flow.
it could only have been 2ft deep yesterday when i got turned away.

I notice some people in the media have been 'moaning' about the wash from bow waves of 4x4's and trucks ploughing through the waters. Please be aware of the havoc your bow wave might be wreaking when making your way through water. In particular be aware of swamping smaller vechicles or sending waves of water at peoples houses. We 4x4 owners have a poor image all ready- please don't make it worse by acting irresponsibly.

A couple of days ago I was talking to the crew in the Ambulance featured in this article (http://www.wakefieldexpress.co.uk/ViewArticle.aspx?SectionID=702&articleid=2981742), they'd been 'blued' (called out) to the south of the City & made the decision to commit, as the alternative routes added anything between 15 & 45minutes dependant on the other traffic.
'XXX' who was driving said they started to get worried when papers were water appeared in the door-pockets

I've also been down Newton Lane at Ledston today (mentioned previously in this thread by me) & the water levels don't appear to have changed at all.

The bridge that I took the image of the piling platform from (also earlier in this thread) has had the civil engineers inspecting it over the past couple of days for, presumably(?) flood damage.

I forgot to add.......

Obviously the road was closed due to the water levels (it's the main arterial road out of Wakefield to the south-east, ie; Doncaster)

Just adjacent to the closure is the areas 'travellers camp'.
It was nice to see that their usual various 'legitimate business's' were severely curtailed for the day, as there was a constant Police presence of at least 4 Officers stood not 20 yards from the camp entrance
