another problem i have is there's this random rattle every now & again from what sounds like 2 joints hitting eachother from underneath near where you sit.. loud metal on metal clanking. nothing makes it happen, it just does it sometimes.. some are short little bangs, other times it can go on for ages. really embarrasing, to the point of the kids knowing im coming & hide... lol

did this start just before the other problem?
If so could be the balance belt has gone, and parts of this have ended up in your cambelt causing it to jump a tooth or two.
Just a thought.

yeah, the rattle has been on & off for a while... sometimes it wont happen for weeks..but ill run that idea past who looks at it... cheers :D

This could just be the exhaust out of line and knocking against the crossmember.
worth rechecking after you've sorted your timing belt
