My mate had a Maestro back in the 80's - every time you put the lights on, the engine cut out, it turned out to be a dirty/corroded engine earthing strap.

worth a look.

I had this exact problem on my 300Tdi, it turned out to be the connectors to the bulbs on the headlamps. They had shorted out,, replacements can be obtained from vehicle wiring products at Ilkeston. It's no good trying Land Rover... 'there's no call for them sir!'

I'd be inclined to check the fuses. Make sure they are connecting properly in the fuse box. Waggling the fuse may make the lights go off.

Local scrap yards have plenty of them,
Standard fit connector on most headlight bulbs.
