Title: Air Con?
Post by: Andy. on December 01, 2004, 22:25:08
Seen a air con unit for a 200 on ebay and at the mo it's cheap.

What are the pro's and cons of fitting air con to the motor  :?:

Cheers.

There's the obvious, like, it's cool in summer, your windows de-mist quicker and stay de-misted. The not so goods, slightly increased fuel consumption, dry air can make your throat sore on long journeys, puddle of water under your motor has you worried at first! Expensive to re-gas. I've got it on the car and quite frankly wouldn't buy a serious form of transport(ie not the land rover) without it.

I imagine more bits needed than the compressor

Don't think I've used apart from a couple of times to make sure it still works.

I used the climate control most of the time on the Disco when I had it. It's just become a habit now, and have it on all the time in the Passat.

The fuel economy thing's a bit misleading sometimes as well - granted you loose a couple of MPG, but with an engine with the power of the 200 or 300 TDi, it's no more than that - the 1.4 "micro hatch's" with air con struggle a bit though  :D
Interestingly, (unless you've got the Climair deflectors - Andy!) you lose more MPG by having both front windows open than you do when you're running air con.

It's a bit of a faff to fit for your self - call a local air con specialist for a quote - you might find it cheaper in the long run than buying all the bits separately yourself, and then trying to find someone to fit it! Just depends how much you want it...

Cheers

Where I come from you need it! S.Africa but why you need it in this country is a mystery-I personally think its a waste of time and money...
There is nothing like driving through the country in England on a nice summers day(when we have one) with the windows open taking in all that fresh air...We spend that much time with our windows closed it makes a change to have them open.........Only my opinion though :D

If you fit air con to a 200 you will not have a glove box on the passanger side as that is were the evaporator fits.
Ask Paul, he had a 200 disco with air con and a webasto heater so he will know if it is worth the trouble.

Very true about the glovebox,
Carn't help with fitting as it was already intalled.

You will lose the glovebox but then again is this thing really a glovebox?
The center console bag or box is more than enough anyway.

You have to remove the complete dashboard assembly to install the A/C bits to it.

There is a loss of power when you operate the A/C, especially with the 200Tdi engine

BUT

it is a blessing when you drive during summer (especially here in Greece where I live), it is very good to have it when the atmosphere is dusty and it demists the windows in no time in winter.

If you can find it cheap buy it.

Take care
