Title: synthetic or 2pak??
Post by: MY90 MY LIFE on May 04, 2007, 15:51:45: wat is the best paint to spray a 90 with?? can we have the for and against?? i got 10 litres of synthetic blue free so i know which one i prefer :) any hints and tips wud be a real help:)

Post by: smo on May 04, 2007, 18:23:13: 2 pac is without a doubt a better paint, harder wearing etc. etc. but unless you have a full spraybooth, workshop, oven, respirator etc you can forget it!

Altho the Porter at work used to have a garage and rekons he used to spray 2pac out in the street :shock:

Car paint from now in is going to be water based, cant remember the full details about it but in a year or so it will be illegal to sell any chemical based automotive paint. But wont be illegal for you to buy gallons of the stuff now and keep it in the shed.

Again not sure on the full details, just trying to remember what the bloke at the paint shop rambled on about when i was getting some alli primer.

Post by: Hangover on May 04, 2007, 22:07:55: Avoid synthetic as anything sprayed on top of it usually reacts and if the job goes wrong you will have to wait ages before you can rub it down and paint over it.

i hate the stuff!, goes on easy and shines no matter what but short lifespan unless your really lucky and have perfect conditions and panels, and you wont.

been painting 2 pack for 20 yrs and not encountered that!! must have been really bad prep..

Synthetic will take ages to dry and recoating is a nightmare as was said earlier, whack it on with a brush or roller and if you are not too fussy it will be ok.

2 pack drys quicker and more resiliant and can be recoated once hard. It would be my choice. I am respraying my 110 a panel at a time using cromodex 600 line 2 pack poly which is an industrial style paint but good enough, only Ã‚Â£22 per litre + hardner, lots cheaper than car paint. I spray in the garage with a mask and an extractor fan which filters the dust out. I will take the whole truck to work to do the non removeable bits tho.

Paint has come a long way, though if you saw the state of my Micra you wouldn't think so. Like all things in life it depends an awful lot on the guy holding the tools. All I can say about the Nissan is that Stevie Wonder is alive and well, and works in a body shop in Sheffield :roll:

Cars arn't painted entierly in water based, they must have a non water based laqured over the top or how long do you think it would last before rain washes it off.

Surely they must also sell something that isn't water based for the laqure

Post by: smo on May 13, 2007, 17:35:34: Water based paint for cars isnt like kids poster paints, it doesnt wash off if it rains, but you are correct it does need laqouring after and as yet there is no effective water based one available so this either is 2 pack or synthetic.
