Yes, and broken down!
It's only for the movement of a broken down vehicle to a place of safety.
Unless it weights under 750kgs gvw (where the camper-vans get away with it).  as it's then a un-braked trailer.

Yes if it's on a public highway. it has to be taxed, mot'd and insured. Also unless you are recovering a vehicle which has broken down A Frames are illegal if towing more than 750kg Gross weight. Your SJ weighs more than this so you can't tow it with an A frame anyway.

My SJ is always broken down after a play day and strangely its broken down on the way there but is easily fixed!

My SJ doesn't weigh 750kg!

At the end of the day Baz it depends when you tow it, you are more likely to ge grief from VOSA than PLOD! they are scarse on a Sunday, On Backroads

Even if it is under 750kg, on a trailer that has got brakes fitted they have to work, so even most of the camper vans are illegal, some may have over run brakes linked to the handbrake mechanism but I doubt theres any that are plumbed into the hydraulic circuits so that all 4 brakes work which is how it needs to be to truely make it legal. VOSA are getting very ken on pulling trailers but seem to be after the proffesionals really and not working weekends so much.

i thought dollies were ok, because either the front or rear is lifted off the ground and so it doesnt apply like the a frame where all four wheels are in contact with the ground!

i tow with a dolly and not a A-frame which when i checked with the dvla is ok as not all wheels are in contact with the ground. suject to the towing wehicle that is.

Tell me something do you have a mental problem or are you just a windup merchant.

Towing anything on a public highway with a dolly or an A frame where the combined weight exceeds 750kg is illegal unless you are moving the vehicle to a place of safety. If any of the wheels are on the road then it must be taxed mot'd and insured. because when you started the recovery the vehcle must have been driven on a Public highway or you wouldn't be recovering it to a place of safety. Would you?

If the weight exceeds 750kg then all the wheels on the towed vehicle must e coupled to the towing vehicle. So if towing with a dolly then the dollies wheels and the rear wheels of the vehicle been towed must be braked as well.
