I am saving up and should be able to buy me an old 90 before the summer is really under way. Now I always fancied spraying a car but have heard a bit about car paints becoming water based?
Will these be more difficult for an amateur (read complete novice) to spray with? I assume they need coating in some kinds of solvent based laquer?
I fancy painting a 90 in some mad colour like maybe tangiers orange or even bright yellow.
The question is, should I buy some paint now?
If anyone has a brightly painted 90, please post you pics to give me some inspiration!

id avoid orange or yellow, personally... theres loads done in both of those colours! see if you can find something a bit more unique :) cant help on the paint front though, sorry

I was under the impression to do it properly water based paints need a 2 pack clear topcoat applied after, which is definatly NOT a home diy job.

orange or yellow? NO!
BRIGHT PURPLE OR PINK

Purple is definatly cool, i'm considering it for my D-Lander, either that or bonatti grey :D

Doesn't have to be 2-pack no, but I was advised (by a paintshop) that the water-based they use needs covering with something. I use GIP Gloss, it's a 1 pack ready mixed, just needs a bit of buffing to get a shine.
Any solid colour that's water based will dry to a waterproof finish. Synthetic paints have been around for over 30 years, it's just that they have got better now because they are the mainstay of the refinishing industry rather than a cheap alternative.
My advice, seek the advice of the paint suppliers when you buy. Buy a decent quality gun and take your time.
