Look at Brooklyn, New Jersey Etc.
You can be in and out of Manhatten dead fast on the Subway but get a good price gain for being that little bit out.
Added to which for general shoppign you can get locals prices instead of tourist prices.

When we had a couple of nights there whilst travelling on honeymoom, we stayed in the Marriot Financial
I believe it was outside the area of 'Ground Zero' (9/11), but it was still rather close to the Towers & the Yacht Club.

I've not been to New York, but I can second the advice about staying "out of town".
When I was in Chicago last year I stayed in Arlington Heights (25 miles from Downtown Chicago). The train was $5 and took 30 mins to get into Downtown. The hotel was half the price of those in Downtown.
The only downside, Ogilvie station isn't a nice place at 10pm.

my wife went to nyc in 2000 and stayed in a b&b facing central park
said it was quite cheap and close to the shops
bought me some sketchers from macy's which doesnt exist anymore....

We stayed at one of the Raddisons, room only.
Hotel had a coffee shop, where we ate, and a Starbucks attached to it, but you can always go to a McDonalds for your breakfast.
But if you are willing to travel a little then out of town/off Manhatten would be a lot cheaper.
We managed to get fleeced by a taxi driver whilst he was busy telling us the places not to go to as they will fleece you!! Gave him a $100 for a $20 fare mistake and he gave it me backback saying that the fares was only $10 not $10 each so I gave him a $10 for the fare got to the hotel checked my wallet and found that he'd given me a $10 bill back! All part of the experience I suppose.

We stayed here in New Jersey

It was clean, affordable and the bus into New York (Times Square) is only $3.20 and stops right outside the hotel.
Would highly recommend this place to anyone.
