Just had a rather alarming phone call from my mechanic. I took my 300tdi Disco 1 to him because I thought the exhaust was blowing (but couldnt find where from).
With the aid of mirrors...he found that it wasnt the exhaust...but the head gasket that was blowing at the back
He cant work on it properly now till second week in May....but has warned me that its going to anything from a simple skim and gasket change right through to a possible new engine
Theres a couple on Ebay that I am watching...but anyone have any idea's how much for a decent 2nd hand 300TDI?
Cheers
Off to drink heavily now.........

i may well be wrong, but i believe that this is a common fault on 300TDI's (that's jinxed mine now) and can usually be sorted with a skim? Surely cheaper than a new engine.
I am sure someone will come along and post a more helpful answer shortly.

as a worst case...... mine is in at the moment to have a fully re-conditioned engine fitted as i blew it the other day. I'm also having a new clutch and radiator fitted while its in pieces and its all going to be guarenteed for..........1500- 2000!

TDI HEAD GASKETS DO BLOW AT THE BACK, DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE HEAD SKIMMED JUST A NEW GASKET NORMALLY, UNLESS HEAD HAS GOT KNACKEREDOF COURSE, BUT I DOUBT IT. WE HAVE HAD 2 DONE JUST REPLACED HEAD GASKETS BOTH TIMES AND ARE SWEET AS A NUT.

beginning to feel a bit better, after these replies....hell still going to drink heavily though

always skim then as even a tiny bit of warpage can [!Expletive Deleted!] the gasket again quickly
