Title: Grand Cherokee Rear Axle
Post by: kdev on April 12, 2007, 21:39:37
Hi,
unfortunately it looks as if my limited slip has given up, and am now considering a second hand replacement.
Does anyone know what will fit a 1998 4.0 petrol auto grand cherokee, any help is much appreciated thanks!!!!

unfortunately mate, the only thing that will do the job & bolt straight on is another 4-litre grand cherokee axle........

the axle itself is the same as on a 4-litre cherokee, but obviously as the grand is a coiler the mountings are different

whats actually wrong? it might be worth a rebuild.....

Just spent a considerable sum on having all halfshaft bearings and collars replaced to cure a very loud clunking as both wheels partially sieze when reversing around a corner!!
Jeep dealer advised above but hasnt cured it, now been told it may be limited slip, and or crownwheel and pinion etc, any thoughts??
Do you know if all grand cherokees have the same axle, what years will fit, etc, many thanks

ring someone in the states and see if they have an alternative
try 'rocky road outfitters' or Randys ring and pinion'
(google them)

My guess is they will have a replacement diff/limited slip diff/ locking diff  that you can fit instead and cure all your woes

Ive used US suppliers, and they are well worth the cost of a call(or even an email)
