Title: Grey Fergie
Post by: V8MoneyPit on April 10, 2007, 18:27:48
OK, so maybe I'm getting old, but we stopped to look at a restored TE20 Fergie in a local village. It's for sale at £1800 which is what it cost it's elderly owner to put together. Having had it put together by his son, his legs won't let him get on and off it! So, he is reluctantly selling it.

It has been totally stripped, engine everhauled (new bearings, rings, etc) all the steering has been stripped, inspected and rebuilt, new oil pressure and water temp gauges, all new wiring (not that there is much!). All the parts have been blasted and painted. Starts on the button (or lever in this case!) and drives really well. Just needs one front tyre that is perished and struggles to hold air.

At the moment we are resisting....... But you never know

I thought all TE20's were petrol. Shows how much I know!

Anyway, I doubt we will be buying it... sense has prevailed over impulse   We don't really *need* a tractor, so it would be a pure toy. We would only justify it buy having to buy a topper, a roller and a sprayer to go with it   I can run a spayer on the back of the Land Rover and I already pull a harrow with the LR!

The first TE20's ran on petrol. There were later versions that ran on Tractor vapourising oil (TVO), sometimes called "petrol/paraffin" and diesel. Some were converted in the UK to use a 3-cylinder Perkins diesel engine.

TE stood for Tractor England.
TO stood for Tractor Overseas.
Between 1948 and 1951, the TO20 with a Continental engine was built in Detroit, Michigan.

Models and production years:

TE-20 Continental Z-120 petrol engine 1946-1948
TEA-20 Standard Motor Company petrol engine 1947-1956
TEB-20 Continental Z-120 petrol engine - Narrow wheelbase 1946-1948
TEC-20 Standard petrol - Narrow 1948-1956
TED-20 TVO 1949-1956
TEE-20 TV0 - Narrow 1949-1956
TEF-20 diesel 1951-1956
TEH-20 lamp oil engine 1950-1956
TEJ-20 lamp oil engine - Narrow 1950-1956
TEK-20 petrol - Vineyard 1952-1956
TEL-20 TV0 - Vineyard 1952-1956
TEM-20 lamp oil - Vineyard 1952-1956
TEP-20 petrol - Industrial 1952-1956
TER-20 TVO - Industrial 1952-1956
TES-20 lamp oil - Industrial 1952-1956
TET-20 Diesel - Industrial 1952-1956
Half a million TE20 tractors of all models were built. They were succeeded by the FE35, and then shortly after Ferguson merged with Massey to become Massey-Ferguson. For a time both Massey Harris and Ferguson brands continued alongside, until the FE35 became the MF (Massey Ferguson) 35.

Good grief   Now I have absolutely no idea which model it is!! They are just such a cute little tractor and we would use it rather than polish it...... but MUST RESIST, MUST RESIST......

My mate used to have a couple of huge allotments (don't know if he still does) and they had a Fergie on there.  Front wheels will take Disco tyres and the back ones are still a common size.

Well, it's sold. Sarah saw someone driving it away with a big grin across his face! Probably best that we didn't buy it. Too many toys..... you know what I mean

Oh well......

Looks like we are now on the hunt for a TE20 'grey Fergie'    Got our eye on a couple that aren't too far away. Done some research into different models, parts availability, reliability, etc Talked to the local guru who was really helpful.

Anyway, the outlook is positive..... I'm officially getting old if I'm getting a vintage tractor   But you will NEVER see me sitting in a deck chair with a flask of tea next to my Fergie at a county show

For those who might be the slightest bit interested, it's a 1950 TEA-20 with the Standard petrol engine.

We are off to collect it tomorrow.

We have about 10 acres of grazing for horses and we get fed up waiting for people to come round to top it, etc. So it was a choice between a modern compact tractor that will cost a fortune up front and then depreciate like a lead balloon or a vintage one that doesn't cost a fortune and won't depreciate!
