my son has gone and bought himself a disco \:D/ \:D/ a m plate 300tdi and is driveing down from leeds with it at the mo just rung me and said he is having trouble getting it into first gear has anyone got any thoughts on this (i at the mo dont have a clue  ) he is due here at midnight so i can look at it then he is off to cornwall where he lives. any help would be welcome many thanks

Just first gear or all gears?
Usual things are selectors or old oil in the box, if its all gears maybe the clutch, tell him to switch the engine off put it in gear keep the clutch down and start it up abd see if it creeps forwards
-
Is he still in Leeds, if so, where?
Pete.
-
it would be worth quickly changing the oil, it may well make it better if there is some thing elce wrong with the box. If its just 1st it dosent sound like a clutch but who knows!
-
he is on the m1 at the mo i think it is only in first gear i am looking at changing the oil as soon as he gets here i just need to find out what type of oil for the gear box? many thanks to you all for the info
-
Dont really need first gear in a disco unless hes towing, just tell him to use second and worry about it when hes back. Then I'd start by seeing what te clutch is like.... 1 st gear usually means your stationary about to pull away so low clutch would be a prob, 2 3 4 n 5 are not so bad as your moving
Cheers Steve

No problem.
Was going to take a look if he was still in Leeds. If he's made it onto the motorway should make it OK.
Pete.

Was it a hopefull ebay purchase? If so are there any clues on the ebay listing?
-
thanks for the offer pete he is head strong and wants to get it home as soon as poss (and to be honest i want to see it as well :(contented): ) he has been quoted £1500.00 for the insurance and is still willing to buy it (looks like being a landrover nut runs in your geans :(scared): :(bigsmile): ) oh well we wait and see
-
yes the ebay listing no is 220086099540 any one got any thoughts?
-
It does state in the listing the gearbox was a bit notchy before he stopped using it.
£1500 for insurance. Pah thats cheap. My first years insurance was £2200 tpft and that was reduced with doing my pass pluss by £600!!! He has a bargain at £1500 then
It is painful though to know m reg discos are only getting £1100 resale. I paid £4200 18months ago for my m reg disco
-
If as the guy says it fells a little notchy then it may well be that it is the gear box oil needs changing. Old thick oil get in the teath and dose not alow a smoth change.
I dont know how old you son is but i was insured with flux when i was 19 on a 200tdi disco for around £550 when i was being quoted £1000+ every were elce. it dose meen a max of 5000mile a year though.
He got him self a bargin mind I just paid £1900 for a m reg 300. A few less miles and a 5 door, but still it show the dirence in car prices in the north.
-
ive just turned 19, been insured since i got the disco in july under norwich union van insurance. my disco is a 2 seater comercial 300tdi s reg. number of seats makes a huge difference. under dad's name its about £600! bargain. goodluck!!!!
-
That was a bargin, a bloomin big bargin.
When I had my first Disco I paid £5200, that ws 2 years ago and on a P with 162k miles :x
The one I have now I PX'd a diesel R reg Scenic and £500 so I feel better now although the list of things fixed and needing fixing gets longer.
How is finding the gears, it could be the selector plate about to go :?:
-
well the son has been and gone off down to cornwall it doent look too baad except you cant get it into diff lock at the mo i think this maybe due to it never being used. the problem with the gearbox seems to be with the first and sometimes the second gears still not sure about this.could it be due to low oil in the box? wrong oil? i have been told that some of the 300s have a diffrent box and the oil is diffrent any thoughts on the matter ? it seems that this maybe the only problem (fingers crossed :(bloodshot): )

Tell him to depress the clutch ALL the way down, most people, I believe just toe the pedal down between half and three quarters.
-
According to LROi this month p.39 MTF-94 is the gear oil to change too, to improve the change
-
Did they say how much they were paid to promote this oil.
-
LR changed spec on the R380's from ATF to MTF94 at some point during the production of 300Tdi's, it's a blanket change as well not if you're vehicle was built after such and such a date.
-
what is MTF 94 ? never heard of it before :(stoopid):

what is MTF 94 ? never heard of it before :(stoopid):
its like ATF Dexron 3 but not red
-
can you use dextron lll ?
-
I have a real issue with this MTF94 story.
I purchased MTF94 from Keith Gott on his advice when i first purchased my 300tdi and it is not very cheap.
I did however pop into landrover in basingstoke (webbers) who informed me to use ATF Dexron 2 and not MTF 94.
I went to keith gotts who said MTF was the correct fluid so i had webbers recheck this.
They said that the 300tdi uses ATF and not to use MTF 94. They say the discovery changed to MTF 94 later on but that it should only be used in series 2, freelanders and later models.
Webbers (a landrover main dealer) have told me under no circumstances to use MTF 94 and to keep using ATF Dexron 2 (which i do).
Any help would be very appreciated as i have £20 odd quids worth of MTF on the shelf that i will not use!! :(
