Title: Some advice required - Grand Cherokee
Post by: paddym40 on February 26, 2007, 21:36:01
Hi All,

I've bought a W reg Grand Cherokee 4.7 Limited and I love it, however, it appears to have an issue with the diff or something.  It judders when on 3/4 - full lock.  Its got the Quadratrac system (hope thats how you spell it! ;)  )

Now I read somewhere that changing the diff oil is the best way to help fix the problem, provided there are no mechanical issues.  So thats what I'm going to do.

I'd appreciate if anybody could answer these questions:

1.  Is it likely to be a diff problem when the car has done 40000 miles and hasn't  towed anything or been off-road?
2.  I believe I need 75w140 oil plus mopar additive for the diff.  Where is the best place to buy this?
3.  Is it easy to change the oil or should I get the local garage to do it?
4.  If the oil change does nothing, roughly how much am I looking at to replace the most common failures in the 4x4 system? (just a ball park figure is fine)

I'm worried that my first 4x4 experience is going to be a costly one.

Cheers.

Does it do it all the time, I only have a problem on my drive if I pull away too quickly.
I thought it could just be because its permenant 4x4 so you get the back wheels trying to push the front ones forward while they are turned elsewhere.

Xjs and Grands are well know for having trouble with the LSD and/or diffs in general.

Drop Mik Stansfield at Rednexxs a PM. He will be able to talk you through it and give a very competitive quote for any work needed.

2. I'd get both from the dealer, it's cheap enough.
3. Easy job. Just unbolt the cover and let all the old oil come flooding out (you will probably have to chisel off the cover, as the gasket will hold it on). It will make a mess though, so use a bowl or something. Have a look for any nasty bits or metal, and if its ok, use silicone as a gasket and put the cover back on. Let the silicone dry, then undo the nut on the cover and refill, then add the LSD additive at a 2-5% mix. Total capacity is 2.3 litres. Drive the car around in figure 8s to run it in.
4. As Mark suggests, ring Mik, he's da man!

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies.

Alane:  Pulling away in a straight-ish line quickly is fine, but pulling away at any speed with the wheels turned starts the shuddering off.  But what you said would make sense if I hadn''t heard about all these problems  :D

MK1:  Thanks for the tip.  I'll drop him a message.

tim_aka_tim:  I definately fancy giving it a go myself.  So thanks for the advice.

Oh by the way, is there a Haynes manual for my GC?

Cheers.
