I WILL KEEP A LONG STORY SHORT, MY 1998 DISCO 300 TDI HAD THE HEAD GASKET DONE IN NOV 2005, A YEAR LATER IT POPPED AGAIN SO I DID THE REPAIR MYSELF THINKING THE GARAGE HAD BODGED IT, IT WAS SKIMMED VALVES RE-SEATED AND PRESSURE TESTED........
3 MONTHS LATER GUESS WHAT!!!! IT'S STEAMIN FROM THE EXHAUST, HEATERS BLOWIN HOT AND COLD, PRESSURISING THE COOLING SYSTEM AND ALL THIS INTERMITTENTLY.. SO IVE JUST CHANGED THE HEAD GASKET YET AGAIN, AND ITS STILL THE SAME!!
IS MY CYLINDER HEAD CRACKED??? IF SO WHY DID IT PASS THE PRESSURE TEST ONLY 3 MONTHS AGO?? :?
PLEASE HELP AS MY GIRLFRIENDS USING MY 110. Thanks all. :(

head gasket aint got anything to do with MOT - so YES it will pass the MOT..cheack the block as this may have cracked..also did you change the bolts - or reuse??

You get some strange answers on ere!!!

was the head pressure tested hot or cold ?? as this can have very different results? is all your cooling system in good order?

It was early, :(bloodshot): late night Bezza?

The m.o.t's fine!! Haha.
Changed the bolts, don't know if the head was pressure tested hot or cold.
When I first start the disco after about 30 or 40 seconds steam starts to pour from the exhaust but clears if you take it on a run for 5 mins or so, but then the heater will suddenly blow cold and the cooling system pressurises. As far as I know the cooling systems ok and had the usual water pump and gasket, and the P-gasket, flushed the radiator and heater matrix, and made sure the system was bled properly..
Is it the head thats cracked? Or the block? :(
PLEASE SAY THE HEAD!!

If either are cracked try using a crack-sealing compound on it. My mate sells 2 very good ones, one is more 'serious' than the other or use them both, one to seal quite bad cracks and the other to fit and forget as a preventative measure.

Fitted a re-con head today and it seems to be ok!! :D
Although when you take the oil cap off there seems to be a bit of steam comin out? Any ideas? The engine temp is normal, heater stays hot, and no pressure in the cooling system. If you have any thoughts on the steam let me know please. :?
Thanks for the replies all...

Get a bit o steam from my V8, i think its just a bit o oil vapour? i hope.
I`ve had no water loss or gunk on the oil filler cap.

I'll keep an eye on the temp and water level and see how she goes!
Then get round to work on my 110..
Cheers Jay. :D

Did you use a thicker head gasket?
they come in 3 thicknesses, which are indicated by 1,2 or 3 small holes. to thin a gasket would mean higher compression and maybe too much for the gasket (not to mention the possibility of valves hitting the piston). The heads are specially hardened and land rover don't recommend skimming. It may be that your head keeps warping as it has gone 'soft' due to being overheated at some point. You may need to get a hardness test done.
When I had my head gasket done it was given a light skim and moved up a size on the gasket. It also passed the pressure test and so far has been fine (touches wood!) and that was about 3 months ago!
I hope you don't need a head as the raw materials are £350 plus!
