Title: Servicing
Post by: davidjmiller on February 18, 2007, 23:03:57
Ok, so as a complete beginner I've started servicing the old V8. Oil change and oil filter change no prob. Today changed the Ht leads and that made a great difference to the smoothness of the engine (it was a bit groggy on LPG with the occassional mis-fire).

So, I have ordered the correct spark plugs from RPI but I forgot to ask what gap to use. I asked my local LPG garage and they said "25 thou" what the hell does that mean in mm??

Also, in terms of the air filter - it that something I just take out and clean or do I need a replacement?

Sorry  about the basic questions

Well according to the RPI website the plug gap should be 8mm - 9mm if that's any use
The air filter can only be cleaned if it's a K & N type washable filter - if its a paper one bin it and fit a new one - if it's filthy that will have a better effect than the plug leads on the way it runs
I always fit washable (k&n ) filters to any Landie I plan to keep for a while - cheaper in the long run

8 mm

do you mean 0.8mm ? as 8mm is more like a air gap

Dan - thank you for pointing out that the decimal point seems to have packed up on my keyboard
Poor DJM would of burst all his plugs trying to get a 9mm gap on them !
Just as well you are on the ball

Thanks guys. I'll go for the .8 mm. Does anybody know how this relates to the "thou" scale??

Also, for the "spark-plug virgin" I guess it's just a case of apply tool, unscrew plug, bin, check gap on new plug, hand tighten then finish with tool. I understand that I have to be really careful not to cross thread but is there anything else I should be wary of??

Thanks once more,

DM

There's about 39.4 thou in a millimeter  (http://www.onlineconversion.com/length_all.htm)

Just 'cos I'm a fussy (sad) so and so, before you take the plugs out clean around them well (I use a hoover). It is amazing how much crud collects around the base and you could do without that in your engine when you unscrew them!
