ok my 1984 90 has now got a 200tdi fitted, but i've hit a problem with it starting.
when you turn the key it tries to turn over but doesn't seem to have enough power in the battery to start it, i've charged and had the battery drop tested (though this was done at halfords) and was told the battery was ok, i assume that as the starter tried to turn the engine over that it's not that thats faulty.
before it wouldn't start i could smell a burning electrical kinda smell coming from around the fuse box (none were blown) and a relay clicks behind there somehwere. now i think it may be the relay burnt out but can't seem to find a reference to it anywhere to buy a new one, it's got no markings on it from what i can see, anyone got a clue as to what in rambling on about ?

have you tried it with another battery?
-
nope not got one to try with :(
-
Mine did this the other night, i had a batt isolater and was drawing so much curent it melted the switch causing a poor contact.
-
Could be the starter is past it's best and drawing a lot of current, or it could be the contacts on the step-up relay are pitted and causing a resistance.
-
well i've ruled out the relays there ok
i'm now not too sure on the condition of the battery even though i had it tested
the engine will try to turn over but very very slowley then the battery gives up, even with a jump start.
where would i find the step-up relay ? is it on the starter ?
