Title: Whiring noises
Post by: rich42 on February 01, 2007, 13:27:06
As a relativly new owner of a 2005 TD4, I am just getting used to all the various noises that the car generates, from, I guess assorted fans etc.

Does anyone know what could generate the whiring sounds, such as the noise that starts a couple of minutes after the engine has started and lasts for 30 secs or so, comming from under the passenger side dash area.

Also when the engine is turned off, there is a high pitched whiring noise from under the bonnet....its not the electric fan, it must be from some other fan buried deep in the engine bay......any thoughts?

One more question.....just in front of the passenger side front wheel, is a small pipe, pointing downwards. In cold weather, I sometimes see some vapour or smoke comming out here, just after I have stopped. Any ideas what this is for?

Regards, Rich

The noise after you switch off and the pipe are one of the same, I think. I understand it's to do with cooling the turbo so it doesn't seize.

These new fangled things are far too complicated.... if my older cars make a funny noise it's usually bad news!!

Possibly a run on system of some kind. The Audi has a cooling fan at the back of the bay that keeps blowing air over the injectors and turbo afte rthe engine is off, maybe this is something similar. Turbos dont like being just stopped when they are red hot.

The wining afterwards is most likely the fuel burning heater
