I've taken the 90 into the garage today to have the brakes done. I aksed them about the woosh of air I get when I open the diesel cap.
They've just told me it's a problem with the diaphragm (sp?) in the fuel injector and that basically I need a new diaphragm as all the turbo is being sent back into the tank and may make the tank explode.
Anyone else experienced this? Will it have meant an increase in fuel consumption and decrease in power?
-
Last time this happened to me it was the breather pipe on the fuel tank that was blocked. Granted this was on a citroen 2cv a good few years ago, but might be worth a try before spending money trying to fit new bits right left and centre!
Cheers

I've been down there to see them and they're adament that it's what they said. The diaphragm in the pump.
I think it is actually blowing rather than sucking as I've had diesel blown onto me before!
-
Shold still vent through the breather.
Personally that explaination sounds like bollards but I dont know the defender setup.
-
how much are they trying to charge you for it to be done ?
-
Even if the diaphram was blowin, the pressure would be sent out through breather. Blocked breather it is if you ask me....
How would you even get fuel with the diaphram pressurisin the tank, would have to get past the lift pump as well woudnt it?
-
£75 for the diaphragm PLUS labour (plus VAT i guess)
It gets better though

i think you being ripped off from what you have said with this and your axle IMHO
-
The place you have gone to is taking pish!!!
If the diaphragm has split, then a new one is £25 max!! And takes about 30 mins to fit.
And I don't believe it would pressurise the tank... it would however back fill the turbo and the inlet manifold.
I know this because I had this happen when I had a 2.5Td...
A pressurising tank is usually caused by a blocked breather, or the wrong type of filler cap.
And with regards to axle, they either don't know what they are doing, or again are taking the micky!!
I could supply you a good used axle if needed, or just the hub ends much cheaper than an complete axle!!
I could even do the work for you

buy a new fuel cap. should sort it out. breather is in the cap.

The breather is in the cap... but there is also a breather pipe on the tank...
-
now correct me if im wrong but, if the cap is wrong and the breather is blocked, theres no air getting into the tank right :?
so how does air get in to compensate for fuel going out ?
so when you switch the engine off naturally the tank is going to syphan the fuel out of the pump filter and lines to try and fill that space up ?
o yeh btw, this garage is having your pants down
ive got the bits here if you need a hand

I think they know what they're talking about so I'll let them get on with it and if it fixes it it fixes and if not then it'll be something else!!
-
Meanwhile you are paying silly money out for each thing they dont get right...
Your choice matey.

At the risk of sounding crass.
ARE YOU STARK RAVING BONKERS :!: :!: :!:
-
so how can air get through the FUEL system to pressurise the tank?????????????????????? AIR in fuel system + NO STARTING
deffo try a different cap first, then if that doesnt work, talk to PORNY - sounds like that garage are all going on a foreign holiday this year - at YOUR expense!!
1st rule, try the simple stuff first - then as a LAST resort take to a garage that knows Land Rovers, not a back street special

and if it doesnt fix it, they will say its something even more expensive!!
-
bet thats egdons
try mm4x4 - Bod in the service dept is pretty sound and didn't overcharge me when my landy was in a few times before christmas

i agree with the garage on this one, i had the diaphram go on mine ok its the 2.5td and NOT the TDI,
the thing is the pressure on from the turbo goes down to theinjector pump, where the offending diaphram is, past it and travels down the feul return lines to the tank,
i had the same problem with the tank and did my had in people told me various faults, upon reading a thread on another forum posted by porno,
i followed the route of the pipe work and found the diaphram split,
this did cause the power to drop off and also the tank to pressurize, no matter what i did, breathers, change of cap the problem stayed until i changed the bit of rubber (diaphram),
the cost you have quoted is steep and would expect it to be fitted for that as well, my bit only cost me £10 + vat

Well, whatever they did has fixed it. Also changed the prop uj which sorted the wobble. All in all it drives a load nicer!
They said the part that was fitted couldn't be ordered/bought but they fitted one they had hanging around
-
Can someone show me a link of where the diagphrams are available from? Maye with a pic as they showed me the broken one

That's a very dangerous arguament, for your wallet. I could just as easily argue it's caused becasue my Range Rover needs new tyres, send me a cheque.
I'm sorry if I'm being insensitive but it osunds like this garage is praying on you, get your truck back and find someone recomended by a friend or a member on here, I belive you even had an offer of help from one.

a link to another forum with the fault i had
