Title: Pipe
Post by: 90sam on January 21, 2007, 12:00:18
Im looking to make my own snorkel for my discovery and dont want to cut much off the wing. Where can you get that flexy pipe stuff from so that it can go inside the wing and then come out at the end, its quite hard to explain, but basically im looking for some flexible rubber hoses/ tubes and would like to know where i can get them from and what i should use to join it together? Where can you get a mushroom top from?
Kind Regards
Sam

Hello.
the mushroom tops you can get from any 4x4 spare shop. when i did mine on my rangy i used a length of 2.1/2 inch black drain pipe. and got a length of flex pipe that the use on the road sweepers from my local concil repair yard for free and that did the job great

We used 60mm steel pipe. The only flexi is from the air box through the inner wing for about four inches. Th steel starts in the inner wing, and runs to the top of the screen.

A  two meter length of 60mm will make a snorkel, and leave enough to replace the centre box on the exhaust, costs about £13.00.  Mushroom top about £20.00. Takes a couple of hours from taking the outer wing off, to job done.

Nice strong unit, no bits sticking out of the side of the wing, to knock off on narrow gates or trees.

So i may be able to get drainpipe to fit inside the wing then! How would i fix it to the side of the window? Theres all the door rubbers there isnt there, so cant really screw into it  :?

Two small brackets attached to the snorkel, screwed to the screen pillar
with self tappers.
Mark the position of the holes, drill, then inject underseal or similar before installing the snorkel.  This protects against any chance of water
getting into the pillar, and prevents the screws from rusting in.

A similar bracket holds the snorkel to the inner wing.

Mine is fitted with a B&Q square plate riveted to the A pillar on the rear most face.

In this pic (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Skibum346/gallery/Home_Made_Snorkel/0/ab4371bfafcacd91067b5d4f147a21e8.JPG/QSBQaWxsYXIgQnJhY2tldA==) your looking forward on the car with the drivers door closed. In the distance the bonnet is up.

Got more pics but I think I've posted them to you already.. if not... check out my profile pics.
