It's been suggested to me by someone at work that I use'MSN Messenger' instead of ICQ (as I sometimes do at the moment)
However I went home before I could ask him further questions, so it is worthwhile?
1. Is it possible to set up separate 'Messenger' 'user accounts' on the same PC? (very much like multiple e-mail accounts; I have the wife, mother-in-law & myself set up on this PC)
2. My wife may be using it for 'chats' with friends, she won't be interupted by someone wanting me joining in/'over-writing' her conversation will she?
3. As the mother-in-law sometimes uses my PC to send e-mails to family abroad. Are the 'Messenger' accounts password protected, as we might be organising a surprise visit by overseas relatives (& don;t want her opening mine/the wifes in error & reading our plans
-
1. Yo login to messenger over the internet, so you coul have Bustuckerman@whereever and Bushtuckerwoman@wherever as two separate accounts. Unless you specifically save the conversation all is lost when you terminate the conversation.
2. Each messenger account has it's own contacts, if she is talking to someone and another user wants to talk she will get another messenger conversation. Only people she has allowed will be able to contact her.
3. Yes messenger accounts are password protected and you can have a different password for msn to your main email.
I use this at work and home with different email addresses. If you try and log in on two separate PCs the earlier session will be terminated.

Thanks Mick

Yes yes and yes. With the added bonus it doesnt spam your PC to death :)

Surely that is questionable  As it comes ready installed on your computer when you buy windows and the only really good way I have found to get rid of the programme and stop it trying to take over everything is to actually rename the folder it lives in....... I know there is a way to remove it completely but the only fool proof way to do that is edit your registry which you shouldnt have to do :x Can you tell I dont like msn

its a quality programme. i LOVE it.

I love it too. never had any probs with it!

That's funny, cos I think it's rubbish. It has a habit of losing messages - ie, you type something, it leaves your PC, and gets lost before it arrives at the other end. Try having a conversation this way; you can't.
It will also show somebody as logged out when they're not; show somebody as logged in but not let you message them anyway; etc etc.
Given Microsoft have had 8 major releases, you'd have thought they'd have got it right by now, but of course not, it's par for the course for Microsoft software. That's before I even start on the clunky, cluttered user interface which has clearly never been anywhere near anybody with the first idea about product design.
I use it very grudgingly (with a different client) because unfortunately a lot of my friends are already on the MSN network. However, Skype and Google Talk both work much more reliably for instant messaging.

run-find files : find msmsgr.exe and hit delete
Install live messenger, go to options and remove the auto login and run when windows starts options.
Sorted

windows messenger comes included...msn messenger does not.
and yes there are a few (small) differences.
-
Sorry I always thought Windows was a Microsoft product and therefore it amounts to the same thing :?
-
but msn messenger isn't the same as windows messenger, similar but not the same.
you can have both running at the same time too
-
Might I reommend Trillian (http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/). That way you can have ICQ, MSN, AOL, IRC and YIM if you wish. It is multi-user and logs every conversation by default.

Thank you thank you thank you!!!!! :D :D :D :D

Cant really see why you would bother, i have icq and windows messenger cos different people i know use different chat proggys...... If everyone ya know uses icq BTM i wouldn't bother swapping........
-
Tried to instll it this afternoon, but for some reason it gave me Windows Messenger.
It seemed to have a mind of its own, so I removed it, until I can get Microsoft Messenger
-
If you really want it, go for Windows Live Messenger (http://get.live.com/messenger/overview). But why not use Jono's recommendation of Trillian? (http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/)

Big difference between Windows Messenger and Windows Live Messenger the new name for MSN Messenger:
 Windows Messenger does NOT contain adverts on the bottom of your contact list, Windows Live Messenger / MSN Messenger does!
How to un-install Windows Messenger:
Goto Control Panel
Click Add/Remove Programs
Click Add/Remove Windows Components
Scroll down the list and uncheck Windows Messenger
Ok Button needs a click
Then its gone from everywhere it pops up i.e. Outlook, IExplorer, etc

I use msn all the time and spend far too much time on it.
If there was an MSN annonamous group I would be there!!!! MSN is my weekly social life. very sad I know.
I hate live messenger and yahoo messenger etc. MSN 7.5 is the one for me even if it does drop me out of conversations occationaly. grrr
