Yesterday on my way to a off-roading spree in Wales I came to a steaming halt on the M5 eventually being transported home on the back of a big yellow truck with yellow flashing lights :(
Well I spent most of today - about 5 or 6 hours - taking the head off my Shogun to find:

I had a premonition about it being a piston
Question is now - or rather tomorrow after pricing parts - is what do I do
The options as far as I can see are:
Replace piston and rebuild
Get replacement short engine (engine ex head) I should be able to source a 2.5 replacement here
Get replacement full engine - again I should be able to source a 2.5
A replacement car either SWB or LWB
All of these could well be around the same sort of price each obviously has it's own problem
Decisions decisions #-o #-o #-o #-o
And NO a Land-Rover product is not an option!!!

OUCH

i had same prob 6 months ago but i snaped a valve
nackered head and piston i see by the pics the head is damaged cyclone diesel aint it
any how i priced it up and to do all the work my self it would cost about 1000 quid
engine parts very expensive and how far do you go
pistons 80 od quid each might as well do all for
new valves 12 and 8 quid each
if you put pistons in do you do big ends etc as its apart
cam belt ballance shaft belt head gasket set was quiet dear
and how muck to repair head or even second hand one
your cheapest option is 2nd hand engine

That is melted piston you see on the head
However there may be a possibility of the head now having a crack in it
-
buy another shogun - nick the engine - then sell the rest on, looks like the best option.....or buy a landy :D:D:D:D:D:D
-
looking on ebay id buy another one and break yours or save it for parts
but there is a new head on there for 270 quid

but engines are never the same once rebult

Id find out what the cause was?
Was it a dead injector?
lack of water?
be sure before throwing new parts at the old motor and doing it again.
Dont forget you can melt/crack/overheat a piston if an injector is leaking/spraying incorrectly
-
Gutted for you, Julian!
With the potential cost to repair yours... never mind the time and grief... I think I'd be looking on eBay for another Pajero! No good now, I know, but there was a lovely SWB Mk.I on there a couple of weeks ago that went for about £500... so they're out there, Mate!
Hope you get sorted soon!

Make the transplant worth the agro - fit the bigger 2.8 intercooled lump :)

Absolutely, I'd say second hand long engine too, that head has suffered.
Or stick in a Rover V8
Or go Rover V8 and leave the Disco bolted to it
Real sorry to hear that though mate, let us know if you find the cause.
P.S. petrol or diesel?

Diesel
Like the sound of a V8 but not the thought of a disco

I wasn't aware of that so will get them checked if I use them again

Ouch that looks nasty.
I don't like the look of the scoring on the bore of the cylinder next to that one either!
IMHO another engine is the way to go unless you can rebuild that one cheaply and rectify what went wrong.
It only cost me about 50 quid to put new rings in and also one new piston, holne the bores, change the valve stem oil seals and a headgasket on the landy.
As the pajs are far better it should be far cheaper
I know of a chap near new who has a zook with a hole in the piston. It'll cost 40 quid just for a replacement.
Honestly good luck with getting it back on the road.
-
double bum!
life is never straightforward. Rolla is spot on(dont get a BIGGER head)
I wouldnt chance that head as a replacement engine would no doubt cost less than having the head checked out!
hope you get it sorted.

I'd be thinking about the engine dude. The damage on the next cylinder is on the same side as the serious damage to that piston. Maybe a cooling failure or its boiled the water away and nuked the other piston too. If I was doing ti myself I'd be having both pistons out before going further.
-
Go for a recon or Second hand engine, as long as the rest of the car is worth it, which I suspect it it.
-
PM on its way I found someone with a engine they want rid of, well compleat car.
