Title: winch Wiring

Hi all,

Just a quick note to ask if I should wire my winch in via a saftey cut off switch. I got one with it so am guessing its best to fit it.

Also do I just wire it into the live wire to break the connection when not in use.

Yes you should fit a safety, can't answer on the wiring specifics though.  Tis a good idea to fit the safety in the cab to prevent toe rags from operating the winch when unattended.

yes fit it.....for 1 main reason if your winch jams ON for some reason like the remote swich breaks/jammes in or solenoids throw a wobler you have got an imediate form to quickly kill the power safely without having to get near the main connections if there by the drum.

as said fit it ,as its not unknown for scum to wire it to run .
there was a spate of this in a certain northwest town were said scum unspooled the cable attached it to the tow bar and wired the winch to run and you can imagine what happened.better safe than sorry.I have a cut out under the bonnet along with the solanoid box.

You should have two latching Emergency stops, with a seperate reset button so you cant just pull the stop out to restart it, thw stops should be mounted on the corners of the vehicle, IE if the winch is on the front mount them hear the head lights.
You should also have a switch in the cab which makes a solenoid in the live feed to the solenoid pack, this then acts as an isolator.

warn do an isolator set up. they provide a heavy duty solenoid and all the required wiring. i have the solenoid up under the bonnet and find it really good in operation, you cannot operate the winch without engaging it.
You should set anything up so the default is in the off position.

I have a brand new solenoid if any one wants it £8 inc P+P, its a standard solenoid from a Come up winch, its ideal for an Isolating solenoid.
Its the very last of my winch parts, end of an era :cry:

I'll take that off you mate as it's a good idea.  I have a removable winch that can go front or rear (needs a front towball yet) but I've tried diconnecting it quick and it's a faff, so I fitted an isolator just under the front of the bonnet.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the help you have offered..I have wired it up via the cut off switch like you all said, I even went one better and put in a second battery for more juice. You have gota love this website...Lots of helpful people who really enjoy helping out others for nowt in return except a thankyou....LONG LIVE MC I say.
