Title: New Booties
Post by: bigfatsi on November 09, 2006, 09:11:11
After a couple of weekends in the mud I've decided to bite the bullet and buy my 90 some new boots  . So, after asking numerous drivers how they felt about their tyres I've gone for the Insa Special Tracks to replace my part worn BFG muds. Size is 265 75 R16 as were the BFGs, however I've heard that they have a tendency to be oversized. Hope they fit
I only really use the 90 in the mud and driving to the mud so hopefully they'll be ok.

Wish me luck!

Simon.

They've arrived - And are bloody huge!    Tread you could lose a babies arm in. Sweeeeeeeeet.

Cassilis -

Front two are very good - 8mm ish. Rears were obviously on the fronts at one point and have worn on one side. 7mm on one side to 3 on the other. They work great and grip well. My new tyres aren't essential but more of an extravagance, the BFG's will probably last ages yet! If you're mate is interested I'll get some pics. Gimme a ring on 07883 086251

Not happy

One of the new tyres is scrap - must have picked up a return instead of a new - and the company says they will replace it but they can't guarantee next day delivery on Saturday. So it looks like I'm going off road this weekend with only 3 new tyres. I'm holding judgement on the company in question in the hopes they can come through for me - [PooPoo] happens - but up to now the customer service is a bit lacking to say the least. Here's hoping. Like I said. Not happy.

Simon. Grrrrrrr.

Tyre arrived at 7:30 this morning so can be fitted this afternoon. So whilst they might not be too friendly on the phone at least they managed to get me the replacement quickly. I suppose it's just one of those things!

First impressions of the tyres are good. There's not too much road noise (although it sounds like a prop driven plane is chasing you if your freewheeling with the window down!) They seem like quite a soft compound so road manners were better than I expected in the wet last night. I will have to adjust the turning lock as you can hear the tyres on the arms but other than that I'm happy with them (now!)

I'll let you know how they fare in the Mud as I'm off to Langdale on Sunday

I've no idea Dave. You could contact Insa direct but I believe they are a Spanish company. I had a good look around at prices etc but it seems they are becoming quite difficult to get hold of. Cheviot, for example, have a cracking price on them but are struggling to find supply. I presume Paddocks bought them in bulk, hence why they still have them for sale.

I used them in anger at the weekend and they were superb, although it has to be said, we weren't in extreme conditions. The pleasant surprise is the road manners which are a lot better than I was led to expect, the trade off being the soft compound seems quite grippy but inevitably means that they will wear more quickly. Having said it's easier to swallow £260 a set than £160 a corner!

Hope this helps.

Simon.

Remember that Fedima do Simex like in 35's (they actually are almost 36"), although not as cheap as Insa's they are a lot cheaper than Simex.

btw the 35" Simex ET's measure closer to 34" than 35" before you get sizeish!

Cheers

Whats the biggest size tyre a standard 90 suspension set up can take?
(my ideal tyre would be a large radius, with narrow tread, a bit like the old crossply General SAG 7.50)

ie will those beasts fit on mine?

really 2, ...and mine where about 35.5 inch

I have seen the fedimas close up and they look very lumpy on the sidewall to me. must be a 'patchwork' retread rather than a proper bead to bead remould.

i know its down to £ at the end of the day but I reckon its worth at the big sizes goin for the real thing.

Well Dave there is not much in it i have just rang king off road the very nice man said they are stronger side walls than the simex as they are made from truck tyre carcass. I have heard somwhere the simexs side walls are soft helps with the grip i suppose.
The price is £135 for fedima trekker and £160 for the simex so £25 not that much neally a spare free i surpose.

doesnt matter
the 35 11.50 r 15s are 35 and half ish, same as the 16 inch, i was lead 2 believe the 15s smaller, tape measure at ready before buying from d4x4
helps when you av get ur tyres yaself from down bottom

as for the side walls, my bets are simex are thicker
been workin with trucks for the past 4 years fridays n saturdays, changed many of tyres and they certainly aint thicker than simex
simex are about half inch if not 3/4 inch thick and i aint exadurarting there
