Title: Stuck bonnet
Post by: pritch on September 30, 2004, 13:35:01
Well, I'm taking the Disco in for the MOT tomorrow, but I've hit a big of a snag.  The bonnet won't open.

I pull the handle, and am greeted with a loud squeak from under the bonnet, so I think the cable is intact, but I don't hear the familiar 'clunk' that you normally get.

I've doused everything in WD40, but that doesn't seem to be making much difference.  Any ideas?

Mine has done this on occasion - seems to have cured itself again now tho.

What I used to do if I was on my own was lift the bonnet and wedge something under there to put upward pressure on it then pull the bonnet release.
If it was a two person job I would lift the  bonnet while the second person pulled the release (the wife usually complaining that she couldn't find the release etc etc). Mind you it didn't help that the actual bonnet release pull had snapped off some time ago and you have to pull the whole cable assembly now!

I'd suspect the slider and pin have worn and need adjusting. The slider assembly should have clearance in its mounting holes to allow you to move it over slightly. The pin should be adjustable for length, but I don't think this is the problem. Just move the slider assy a little.

At least, this is what it would be on most cars! Of course, I don't get the problem with a 110.... nothing as high tech as a cable bonnet release

Get some one to push down on the bonnet at the release mechenism then pull the release, when open grease the release.

Cheers folks, all sorted with a bit of jiggling, and half a can of WD40.

Odd question  :D

Which side of your car is the bonnet release lever fitted  :?:  :?:

Because mine is under the drivers side of the car but  in MZ666 's car it is on the passenger side :?  It will make no difference to the catch on your car it won't make it work better but it may help me solve the mistery as to why they are different they are both 200 tdi's 3 door models.so why :?:  :?:  :?:  :?

Strange most uk cars, including the far east ones have their bonnet lever on the right, Land Rover put it on the left to reach across and try to open it without cracking your ribs is a challenge (for me!), and I have to park the wagon against a fence on the passenger side

Oh Fun
