I will soon hopefully be the owner of a 110 Defender (still keeping the disco), and would like to pick your brains if anyone can help??
I want to keep obviously the 3 seats in the front and the seats in the rear, but what I need to know is can I alter the body at the back to form a pick up? Is it just a case of getting the grinder out and welding a new panel in from a donor truck cab?? Hope ya can help and I hope it is quite simple!! :?

I'm guessing from the fact you mention seats in the rear that it is a station wagon (5 dr) 110. The easiest way and unless you are very skilled then probably the neatest way would be to buy a secondhand crewcab and bolt this on in place of your current roof. This would just leave you needing to fabricate a filler piece to fit between the back of the cab and the floor but that should be quite easy. This option could be quite costly because crewcab roofs are sortafter due to this conversion being so popular.
The other option would be to cut your current roof down and make a complete new back panel for the cab. This would take a lot more work and i have seen very few that actually look good.
As for a tailgate, a standard defender or series dropdown one will fit but you would need to get the chassis brackets (bolt on) and latches to go with it. The other option is to cut down the current rear door or scratch build one and have it side opening. :D

Thanks for the response, This site is excellent!!!!!
Yep it is the Defender 110 SW and now I've seen those pics I've just got to do it! 8) The house can wait, haha. What would I need to do regarding insurance? Would it make any significant difference?
Thanks again..

insurance? well tell them the seating capacity has dropped, and its now a pick up - should confuse them!!
good luck

Could you not find someone who wants to convert the other way and just swap panels and rear tub?

As 110 crewcabs have only been available for a few years now i wouldn't imagine anybody with one would want to do swaps as the vehicle would be relatively new.
