Title: Rear Door hinge
Post by: andygod on August 22, 2006, 07:34:04
I am having trouble with the age-old problem of rear door hinge wear. My back door now catches when it’s open and shut. Does anybody know if the hinges can be repaired or is the only cure to replace them with new? Disco is a 1993 V8.

I've heard a rumour that wizard has found a way to repair them. Somebody could make a fortune if they could be re-conditioned.

Hi
The hinges can be repaired if they are not totally knackered.

Here is a link to the DOC gallery

Hinge repair (http://www.discoveryownersclub.org/phpBB2/gallery2.php?g2_itemId=4217)

The pix seem to be a bit jumbled and the comments i put on them have also dissapered.

Basicly take the hinge off and seperate the two parts. The pins that hold the hinge together are about 40mm long on each side, i thought that it was 1 long pin through the whole of the hinge but its not.
the easyest was to split the hinge is to drill each one out.
Once the two halves are seperated, you will see the inner part of the hinge is worn (the bit the pin sits in)
you have to drill that out untill it is nice and round again.
Once that is done you can knock in two Mills pins (pictured in the gallery)

These are cheap enough from any hardware store, ideally metal dowls would be better, a bit of 8mm stainless rod would be perfect, because the Mills pins are not 100% round, but do the job OK

LR stock new hinges for £27 each

regards
wizard
