Title: Power steering box leak Urgent
Post by: winchman on August 05, 2006, 07:38:41
Help
I have just spent all my spare cash on having the Cam belt done before our hols and now the power steering box is leaking.
It looks to be comming out of the shaft at the bottom, can I just fit a seal?
I know nothing about these so I am struggleing, have just been frightened by the price of a new recon one.
Any ideas?

Regarding a recon unit have you looked at MM 4x4 who seem to have them on offer.

How bad is the leak my RR leaked for months and needed a little topping up now and again.

Yes you can replace the seal, it comes in a seal kit for the PAS box and is part No STC2847R (according to Paddocks) and comes in at £14.46 + VAT.

As Mike said, MM4x4 are doing a recon 4-bolt box for £80.

Does it still have the drop arm fitted as getting that on and off is a pig. Changing the box is not a nice job working alone in any case because it's so heavy and awkward to get at the bolts etc. but it's a bonus if you don't have to change the drop arm.

Most definitely agree with that! Mine needed replacing for the MOT recently. I got a recon unit (with new arm) and looked at where it was   ... and then took the car and box to a local specialist

It is a pig of a job just as you lift the box into place and try to line up the first bolt.  I really don't fancy doing it on the lSE and the airconn pump is an inch above the steering box.

If the leak isn't terminal try this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Power-Steering-Stop-Leak-That-works-PAS-Seals-Etc_W0QQitemZ4616646803QQihZ002QQcategoryZ31348QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem).

I've seen it used on a hydraulic system that was totally goosed and it still did it's stuff.
