Our dog eats its poo if you dont shift it straight away, I mean watch it out of the window it poos ( not if it can see you watching) walks around then plays with it some times eating it.
Any ideas apart from shooting it?
Its eats Iams for small dogs, its a Lasa apso, its the best guard dog we have ever had if we could just sort its bad habits
-
sounds like its not well. :(

Not something that I've had to worry about with Katy (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Wolfie/gallery/Random/0/828bc35ded240b0666641aec53ac6859.jpg/) but looking out there in have found that it's called COPROPHAGIA.
A couple of urls with answers from vets
http://www.anicare.ie/ask_fintan.html

So probably worth asking your vet.

Sometimes its to do with fibre !
Try him on some rice or pasta next couple of meals witha small amount of meat.
We use a little olive in oil . Vet recommended it as it helps withe lots of issues

Thanks wolfie
Been to vet for booster and MOT alls well

It's quite possibly the Iams, it's a very rich food and some of the good stuff probably goes straight through it so it's just recycling (same reason dogs love to eat cat poo - lots of yummy goodness in there still  ) Try feeding the dog something a bit more basic
-
my dog will eat dry cow poo if you let it, also loves fish pellets.
trys to eat them out of the pond, the fish have to fight for it.

god i wish our springer would eat it rather than roll in it   ..... fox pooh is his fav...... must admit he doesnt do cat and dogs stuff thank god , but any wild animal mess and he is there

I did read somewhere that dogs are the only animals that are able to digest such items as 'dog and cat eggs'. Our Heinz 57's do it when they think we are not watching. It makes me want to chuck up when I see it. Mind you, saves me the job of clearing them up.

mix some pineapple into its food then he/she wont eat it's poo
-
Dogs will often eat their own mess; their digestive system is poor enough that it's often nutritious enough for them to benefit from doing so.
We had a guide dog boarding with us last year who would do this; this despite being on a carefully controlled (we had to weigh her food) diet that was monitored as part of 6 monthly vets visits. Sometimes it would seem to upset her digestion a little, most time she seemed to come to no harm.
The advice we were given was basically to discourage it but don't worry about it. If you understand that she'd cost £20,000 to train to that point, you'll understand they weren't taking chances, however disgusting we might find it.
And of course, they know they'll get to lick your face later! :?

If you are in the North West it's probably a farming area? Go to a farm supplier and see what dried food they have; it is very good for the dogs; far better for the digestive system and the nice bonus is that if you buy it by the sack it saves you a fortune.

Winchman,
as a Pet Food shop owner I would say give up on the IAMS, it is probably too rich for your dog.
Gradually try introducing other makes.
The pineapple idea works with some dogs, but it can make them very "runny"!!
Try going to a small local pet food retailer, and not one of the larger Pet supermarkets, and having a chat with them.
Not a Chocolate Lab, is it?
-
It sounds to me, as others have commented, that the IAMS is too rich and largely being undigesteed by the dog thus making ist's poo attractive to eat. We had a similar problem with feeding our dog Chum. The Vet recommended the cheapest ie Chappie and it stopped it - we now feed our dog on dry food (different dog!) with no problems
the previous one lived to a heathly 14 years old

Loads of dogs do this especially GSDs
I walk a GSD / flatcoat cross that ate his and anything else's he could get.
Went through a spell of telling him Diirrrrrty ! in a very stern voice.
Then chased him shouting that with a big stick next time he tried it.
(I wouldn't have hit him - but he didn't know that)
Doesn't do it anymore!
Also didn't do any damage to man / dog relationship that has helped me train him out of other bad habits to the extent he is now one of the best behaved dogs you could meet
Apart from mine (Irish Wolfhound Lurcher)
Re the diet - Pedigree pouches and mixer = perfect productions every time

Hi Dan
sent you a PM

It may just be a simple mineral deficiency and can be solved with a diet change.
-
Hiya,
I would tackle the problem with a two pronged approach. Firstly try all the dietary advice suggested on the posts above so his pooh isn't so attractive for him, there's some good points.
Secondly, have a go at training the bad habit out of him so that then he knows its naughty to eat his or any other dog's pooh that might take his fancy.
Take an old plastic half litre drink bottle and half fill with stones or gravel. Then you will need to watch him like a hawk. Whenever he starts to look like he might start eating pooh, shout NO and simultaneously throw the bottle at the ground beside him. Don't hit him with it and don't throw the bottle in the pooh! The intention is to scare the hell out of him with the noisy bottle and your own voice, so shout No as though you really mean it; put a growl in your voice (it'll probably scare the neighbours too). You may need to keep this up for 2 or 3 weeks until he gets the message but be consistent, so if anyone else takes him out ask them to do the same.
The same technique can be used for other bad habits too.
Hope this helps.

does it have bad breath

have you ever pinished the dog for messing inside the house? it can sometimes stem from this as a need to clean up ! afraid of being punished!
also as said above diet - recycling, bitches are worse than dogs . good luck

Try James Wellbeloved ( only availabe usually from vets). Not as rich as the other kibble makes.
