Title: 300 tdi into an old defender?
Post by: hobbit on August 17, 2004, 21:31:45
Here's one, how easy and whats needed, apart from the obvious engine,

Thinking more on the lines of external ancilleries, mods etc, considering it will be replacing a 2.5 natural asp'td one

You will need (to suit the 300 tdi):

Exhaust (Don't bother using any of the n/a system... it's too small)
Radiator (it has the oil cooler and intercooler all built into it)
Hoses (Intercooler, oil cooler, etc)
To make a small mod to the bellhousing of the box.  (There was a slight difference in stud spacing between the engines - nothing major)
Clutch Assembly
Expansion Tank

Depending on the age of the vehicle, you may also need to make some electrical mods to the vehicle to provide a couple of permanent / switched feeds to the engine bay.

The above is assuming the engine is complete with alternator / starter / loom, etc..   if not, the list is longer.

That may not be an exhaustive list, but it's a start  :)

Cheers Tim

Its going into an F-reg, All that will be available is a complete engine with alternator etc, no wiring loom.

Would a 200 go in easier? That could be a nother option

200's supposedly easier, as it uses the same mounts and gearbox as an n/a.

Still need to get hold of pretty much the same bits of kit as mentioned for the 300, but it's a conversion that lots of people have done.
You shouldn't need to mod the belhousing or clutch assembly with a 200 conversion though.

Quick tip - don't get a Disco 200TDi engine as it's different enough from the Defender one to make the conversion slightly more difficult. If you're going 300TDi, then AFAIK there are no problem differences between Defender and Disco variants.

Hope this helps
