Good luck Dyfed, at lest you can get all the required exercide walking your canine guests??

A few years ago I decided I was getting too porky & got the bikes back out.
I'm about 5'9" & had  got to almost 12stone
So I thought if Lance Armstrong can come back from his cancer & win the Tour, I can lose weight.

I cut out all fried food, chocolate, cakes, sweets, fizzy drinks, etc....
& simply rode as much as I could.

I got to the point where I could drop a friend who was (very) race-fit on any hill, & at any distance.
very Within 3 months I dropped down to 9stone.

The problem was that SWMBO still worked at the Hospital then, & she got fed-up of people asking if there was something (medically) wrong with me to lose weight so rapidly.

Be prepared for the "Are You Alright??" questions as you get closer to your target.

I ought to get the bikes out again, as I'm creeping up on 11stone

That's far too fast!  I used to work for a well known diet company, and all the health recommendations have to followed.  Plus studied (paid for entirely by myslef) and passed on a diet and nutrional course.

Healthy weight loss is 1-2Lb per week.  Initial loss in week 1-2 can be more, but to continually drop so much weight is not good for you.  Cutting out food groups i.e. carb, proteins, all fats, etc is not good for you.  You need to make sure you are getting all your vitamin and minerals that the body needs.

My advice is - take it easy, don't expect too much of yourself and don't think that you have blown it if you have a bad day/week.  There is always the following day/week to get back on track.  If you eat normal foods when losing weight - write down what you consume, as you won't realise how much you have had otherwise.

GOOD LUCK - BELIEVE YOU CAN DO IT AND YOU WILL.

i can recommend kickboxing for burning off the calories and its enjoyable too, i enjoy leathering some pads rather than sweating in a gym and the good thing is you'll notice the turn in your muscle tone straight away plus you'll always have the advantage if you get in a bit of a tussle.

It's really hard to control your weigth with that too, I have a couple of freinds who have it and it seems to make you body think you are starving so it puts fat on just as if you had eaten nothing.

I put on a lot of weight when I stopped cycling (partly as I lost my job, partly because of a cycliing accident) and I ended up learning to swim which I really enjoy.  Trouble is I can't do crawl, I don't seem to have the coordination and I have trouble with my left shoulder too (same accident).  With a little work though my breast-stroke was as fast as some poeple's crawl anyway :)

Must admit I miss cycling sometimes but when I've an hour free I feel guilty if I don't take the dogs out with me and you can just imagine the chaos I'd have if I was trying to cycle at the same time.

I was about to comment on this, but then got to Julie's post. Can't agree more. Rapid weight loss, although seemingly good at the time, can have long term negative effects.

you get 4 foodpacks per day for 7 days

the foodpack is either a soup or a shake

also after the 1st week you also get a crunch bar per day too.

you can drink black coffee and tea

that may be too fast but the guy feels great, isnt suffering and has kept the weight off for over 12 months so it does work

i would hazard that some people would tell you to lose weight gradually and use their product for longer ;)

No, I say, lose it gradually and learn how to keep it off for life.   :?

Learn to eat "normal" food healthily.

Fair enough, every diet organisation is trying to keep you buying their products, after all they are a business.  Why waste money on their stuff, there are plenty of foods in the shops that are a lot cheaper and healthier - you just have to spend a little time looking for them.  Most can though be found in the fruit and veg isles!!!!!!!

Incorporate a balanced diet and a bit of exercise and bobs your uncle!

The odd treat never hurt anyone either - wouldn't life be boring without them.

I agree with Julie, however some people's diets are so lousy that they loose weight very quickly when they are on any 'diet' that limits their food intake.

At my local Slimming World group one lady joined and lost 7 and a half pounds every week for three weeks, the consultant was actually a bit concerned until she described her typical 'pre-diet' diet!  For example she thought nothing of eating two or three packets of biscuits at a sitting, and drank lager or wine every night of the week.

I've lost on average 2lb per week going to my local Slimming World group, which is a very balanced diet, with LOTS of fruit and vegetables.  I've now lost 1 and a 1/2 stone and know I will make it to target eventually.   I am also cheered by the fact that there are people at the group (you get free membership when you reach target) who have been 'at' target for 2 or 3 years, they are still willing to encourgage the newbies like me and pass on their success tips.

Besides, I like FOOD, I don't want to eat cereal bars and drink meal replacement shakes/soups and believe me I have tried them.  Besides I certainly can't afford 66 quid a week to eat them - I have a landrover to maintain......

Good luck all the same, I hope it works for you.

On the way past about 10 years ago!!!! :(

I found teaching Kids footy on a Sunday morning is helping...I eat well, although I do eat too much, but still enjoy the odd Choccy bar, the odd bag of peanuts etc. have lost ~ 8lb since Jan.... But feel a lot better and a fair amount has turned to muscle. Try to do a daily walk, but in effect, prob average ~ 2 x 35 min walks a week, plus maybe 4 x 20min walks (From the station to the office or in reverse) a week. I don't feel particularly hungry, and getting fitter and loosing weight slowely.... that'll do me.

EE

Post by: strapping young lad on July 07, 2006, 16:33:37
the problem i have currenty is that i have very low will power and cannot stop going to the machine for a choccy or two

ive tried all the known diets , but not the atkins at doesnt appeal to my arteries! ;) and found it all too easy to ease of by having a choccy bar now and then , which then escalated and i gave up

since i paid 75 quid for the medical and the weekly amount for the diet is 66 quid means that if i dont follow i lose out both on weight loss and financially

tbh saying eat healthily is the way to lose weight which is blindingly obvious but if it were that simple this nation wouldnt have an obesity problem amongst the teens and adults.

as yazz said.. the only way is up! ;)

The bad just tastes so nice, admitted.  Any cream cake, chocolate, lots of cheese, sausage rolls, crisps, fried food, cream, etc, etc, etc.

When you see what it does to your insides though, you get shocked into realising that taste is not everything!

Moderation is the key, but greed takes over.  I can still be greedy, but I know when I am doing so.  We eat because we can.  If such "nice" food wasn't so readily available, the population wouldn't be stuggling with obesity.  Then there are the additives and other crap that goes into food i.e. hydrogenated fat.  Manufacturers don't help the public, they help their pockets - just like the diet industry.

We also don't have time to prepare the meals that used to be the ones on the table many years ago.  There was so much more fresh food eaten then that obesity was virtually unheard of.  Labour saving devices also play their part.  But god forbid my washing machine or hoover pack up!

My house policy is, if it isn't in the house, then I can't go and eat it!  Or buy biscuits, etc, that others in the house like, and I don't.

Dare I admit, I once weighed 15St!!!!!!!!!!  That was approx 10 years ago when I lost the weight.  I now hang around 9St.  Have been 8 1/2St when stressed to the hilt, and looked fantastic, but I couldn't maintain it, so 9St is ok for me.  At 5Ft 3" I don't want to go back to how I used to feel, and that stops me from pigging out loads.

I couldn't live a life without eating normal food though.  So I learnt how to make the best choices for me, and how to cook it and more importantly ENJOY it.

I hope you find what works for you, not everyone is the same, and if you ever need any help or encouragement, drop me a line.

Interesting post.. I had a heart scare 2 years ago (i was 18 stone then) and after 13 weeks of umming and ahhing they told me to stop smoking (I dont smoke) cut down on drinking (if i have 1 can a week thats it!!).. never once mentioned my weight though!! all i had was 'well your a lorry driver its an occupational hazard!'
2 years later I am the wrong side of 20 stone   ....had a few little 'grumbles' in the old ticker..so i am seriously looking into dieting - only problem being the hours i eat, usually nothing during the day and a good meal from 8pm onwards.. early starts and late finishes mean we dont get chance to eat as a family much..
i have been 'big' all my life -although when i first left home i went down to 11 stone - but looked seriously ill! (i am just over 6 foot when my back is straight)
realistically aiming for 15 stone, as i am supposed to be 12 1/2   ..
any ideas or diet sheets would be gratefully accepted ;)

oh to be underweight

if you are under weight then you have an easier way of getting to your weight than i do.

it depends on your role in work and how you occupy your time when you are in work, as there are times when work is quiet, and its those times when i start to dabble in the sugary stuff

if ive got interesting things to do and am quite busy then time flies, its when time drags... that does my nut in.

so as of monday when i go back to work i wont have any money on me to squander, and me mates in work will help, although my boss wants me to fail, dont think a good looking welshman with a bod to die for sitting next to a pie eater from wigan will make him feel good ;)

I'm 6ft and was 9.5 stone from 17 till I hit 40. I could eat anything and my weight stayed the same. I went up to 12.5 in my early 40's. At 46 I broke my leg playing rounders, (not recomended diet procedure), went down to 9 stone and now back up to around 11 at 58. I sometimes wish I could put maybe another stone on, but hey! That's how I see some troubles.

I don't want to cause any arguments with any medical experts that may be on here who are knowledgable on this paticular subject, but one of my father's mates can't float.  He just can't, and its apparantly because his bones are surprisingly dense compared to his physical mass.  As a result, he weighs more than his natural boyancy will allow, resulting in him going under.

I personally follow a simple guideline.  If you can do most things, feel comfortable about how you look and what you can do, then you shouldn't really worry about how heavy you are.  I'm 13-13.5 stone and 5ft11inch and I'm not chubby at all.

There's also another aspect you need to remember.  Muscle weighs far more than fat does.  A Bodybuilder of equal size to a fat person, will naturally weigh heavier if they were identical apart from the fat and muscle ratios.  (why do I feel as though someone's going to correct me on this?   )

The correct way to work out your Body Mass Index (BMI) is as follows:

BMI = weight (kg) / height(m) x height(m)

If the figure is between;

20-25 you are normal

25-29.5 you are carrying some excess weight

30 and above you and overweight and should slim down for health reasons.

NOTE: If you are extremely athletic and have a very high muscle mass, it will skew the measurements. Ask your trainer or someone at your gym to do a body fat measurement and advise you accordingly

so your weight multiplied by your height squared?

mine is over 30 i know that for sure.

i went for the first time to the meetings today and met the guys already on it including the one who has lost 9 stone in 22 weeks

he looks nothing like his old self, but has some saggy bits round his midrift and back of his legs, but he says it doesnt bother him and unless you look for it you dont notice.

i begin the diet tomorrow since its a new day and not start halfway through today. (besides i had toast this morning)

weight divided by your height squared.

dont forget to do light weights to tone everything up as you go along, even simple things like carrying a can of baked beans in each hand helps

Ok- mine (for example) is 60kg divided by (1.70 x 1.70) = 20.76

Just remember their is no miracle cure for loosing weight   - You have to cut down on what you are eating and make the right choices   ( I know it sounds boring)   I would recommend Weight Watchers - you will get lots of support from the lecturer for much less than £60+ per week and you get to pick and choose what you want to eat!!! but in moderation.

Start making small changes now in your eating habits- every great journey begins with the first step...... DONT EAT THAT CHOCOLATE BAR

thing is i take on board what you guys say bout the different diet regimes out there and tbh ive tried the main ones and didnt find either the person running it supportive nor attending it appealing (the groups around where i live are 90-95% female and the rest us boyos... some of you may find this fine but for me its a big deal to confront my weight but another to walk into a big room then everyoen turn around and stare.. not the best thing for confidence.

the group im in now are 6 including me and the counsellor, its like pub banter, have a laugh, but its not a competition, must say the bunch of lads im with are very encouraging and they complement each other...

I know how you feel mate. I topped 19st this year after quitting smoking 4 years gao. I feel alot better for that too.

I have just started a weight loss plan with my GP. Im on Reductil tabs. It is a food suppressant. I take one a day at 9 0'clock in the morning. (usually at work, when i have my breakfast). I have an apple for lunch, and a meal at 5-5:30pm when i get home. The tabs stop me needing so much. And they stop the urge to eat after my tea.

All i have done is taken the tabs, and stopped eating late, and i have lost 31lb in about 14 weeks. I feel alot better for it,(other than having to buy new clothes).

But seriously, I know how hard it is. Im 26 and have small kids.

The hardest thing for me now is, resisting the temptation to have a Kebab at 12pm when i get in from shooting twice a week. Instead i get my wife to promise me something if i get home quicker. (If you know what i mean). :)

If i can help at all. Just ask.

Perhaps we could start a Mud-Club  Fit-Club, and help each other on. :)

Being dehydrated is a massive cause for being bloated and (mainly for ladies) developing cellulite.

By simply upping your water intake the body can "flush out" certain fats cells that it would otherwise store.  :D

Being dehydrated is a massive cause for being bloated and (mainly for ladies) developing cellulite.

By simply upping your water intake the body can "flush out" certain fats cells that it would otherwise store.  :D

But that doesn't mean drink more tea!

However u can have the naturally caffinee-free fruit teas that i adore  :D

Green tea is also full of anti-oxidants to help clense the body  :P

While cooking my chilli for tea tonight, I was contemplating your £60 per week fee!  I do have a tendancy to ponder some strange things at times.

Now initially, it does seem steep, but then I got to thinking - when you add up the weekly fee for the standard diet clubs and then the products they try to sell you each week, the £60 isn't that bad as it will drastically cut down on your shopping bill.  I still believe that healthy eating is the key along with exercise, but £60 is ok if you are committed to doing it 100%, and then learn a new way of life.

Now some of you may think that you don't spend £60 a week on "diet prods", but if you think about it, bet you aren't far off, including those in your actual weekley/monthly shop.

Something else to think about too - why do you think every weekly topic that your class teacher/leader/whatever you want to call them, is based on a product that they are trying to sell?  It is linked to dieting, as that is their industry, but it always come back to what they are selling.  You don't NEED what they are selling, you need healthy natural food.  Don't be sucked in.

thats what i intend doing, re-educate myself on eating.

i suppose i can still have what i have now (the chinese, the kitkat, the pepsi) but have it in such moderation (once a month for the meal) that when i DO have one it is such a treat.

lol no but i feel hungrier during mealtimes (the lady said its your brain telling you you are hungry)

but other than that slight hunger pangs, nothing a shot of water doesnt cure

i must admit its weird not eating but ive now got crunch bar thingies which you can have instead of a shake or soup so i intend having one tomorrow at 3pm.

but the hunger feelings do go away as your body adjusts to your new way of eating.

Good Luck with lighter life, my wife has been on it twice, the first time really worked for then we moved, couldn't find a new group locally and she fell off the wagon.

You will need to see it all the way through though as the beginning eating phase is quite important in re-educating your brain and body as to what you can eat.

The second time she did it, I joined her for the first two weeks, so I can fully understand what you are going through, and although it was a quick way to drop a stone, it came straight back once I started eating.  The group wasn't realy for her though and then she had some medical tests and was told by the Doctor to come off it.

Personally I prefer to train and moderate what I eat and will be giving Body for Life a go once I'm back off my holidays in the middle of August, can't see any point in starting before as that's planning to fail!

My BMI is 31.1.

That makes me obese according to the charts

I have  mostly been muscle up to a couple of years ago when I started sitting on my arse driving machinery. I have lost some muscle tone and put on about half a stone in that time.

I should be slightly overweight. Even my doctor says the charts don't cover anyone who has more muscle than the average rake.

according to the BMI scale, every player in the USA's NFL football league was rated as over-weight last year, with almost all of them classes as obese....

i know some of them are a bit lumpy, but i think theres a hole in the system somewhere...

you get four packs a day (2 soups and 2 shakes)

you mix them with bout 400ml of water in a blender or in a bowl with a whisk, then drink it

you can add pepper or tabasco sauce to the soup to taste

i add ice in the blender for the shakes to make it into a smoothie

also you can have one chewie bar a day, i have these mid-afternoon

honestly you do not feel hungry but you need to keep drinking 4ltrs of water a day, this helps your fat breakdown and keeps you from feeling hungry

its top!

after you hit your target you get weaned back onto normal food gradually over a 12 week period, starting from a single fillet of meat per day onto things like bread in the 7th week

its so that your body can work it back into your system and you dont get larda$$ again :)

Aye! I know what you mean!
I'm 6'1'', I only eat a cooked breakfast every day, lunch in the canteen, good cooked dinner, & then about 8 to 10 cans of Fosters, & still can't get below 7 1/2 stone! :(

Try eating a bit more, and I bet the weight would drop off. I know it sounds daft, but it works.

The problem with lighterlife is that it doesn't retrain the bad habits (going to the choccy machine).  Unless you can learn to be "good", you'll put the weight back on when you finish it.

On the other hand, if you can deal with 3 months of purgatory every few years to lose it again...

I agree with the other comments though, that's very quick to try and lose weight, and a healty diet will do more in the long run.  SWMBO has being doing Weightwatchers for a couple of years now (lost a lot very quickly and is struggling on the last few lbs) and we've totally changed the way we cook and what we eat - for the better.

if you want something to chew, im sure you would be allowed to snack on raw carrotts (ask in case i am wrong!) as they are mostly water but full of vitamins  :D

or raw celery, as that is a negative calorie food (but i cant stand the stuff!)

no, your body is going through abstinence, or detox if you will, i will scan a picture of the stuff i get in one milkshake cos its loads of vitamins

so...

ALL Food and drinks are banned, with the exception of plain water or black coffee/tea

you can buy water flavourings but a pot of it (bout the size of a mustard jar) is 9 quid!

Good going!

I don't want to sound negative but unless you're going to avoid putting the weight back on it might be worth keeping some of the older clothes.

If you want to find some recipies that are tasty and easy, take a look at some of the Ainsley Harriott books; most of his stuff is pretty simple to make and he's even done a low fat book.

Also if you can get them, the weightwatchers cook books are fantastic for low calorie, great tasting food.  They're only officially sold to members, but do pop up on e-blag (or drop me a PM and I might be able to help with getting some).
