Having finally found a steel front axle I need to know if the gearing is the same.
I've got a '95 SWB Vitara, the steel front axle and diff came from an R reg '97/'98 LWB 2.0l Turbo diesel.
Cheers in advance :)

No ideas anyone? :)

strip it and count the teeth.
Arent vitaras supposed to be 5.2:1
?
At least if you have counted em, you know youre right.
-
vitara'a are 5.12
but i think the auto is a 4.88
-
I'd heard somewhere that the auto was lower geared too :)
I have a plan! :) Without stripping the axle into bits I'm going to rotate the input flange on the diff, lock one side of the axle and count the rotations on the free shaft on both axles - that'll work - I think? (same principle as checking 410 transfer boxes)
correct me if I'm wrong someone :)
-
Yes it will work to count the rotations, turn the wheel one rotation and watch the prop or yolk.
You will have to be very careful counting if your choice is 4.88 or 5.12.

I have both the steel and ali axle casing (with diffs attached) on the garage floor at the moment, so that should make it a bit easier :)
Cheers for the confirmation :D

Whilst we are on the subject. Has anyone on here, fitted a steel axle to a vit before?
I noticed that on the drivers side axle to chassis mount bracket, on the steel axle, there are only 2 bolt holes. The ali axle has 3 bolt holes.
Do I make an extra hole on the steel axle or will it be ok with 2?
Cheers :)

Well having stripped & checked both GV and my spare 1.6 Vitara diff ratios, I can confirm that the GV diff from the 2.0L diesel is 4.3:1 and mine is 5.125:1
So I'm gonna have to swap the ring and pinions over - bum :(
Plus the side gears in the GV diff are 26 spline and mine is 22 so that will have to be changed over too.
Busy, busy :)
