Lots of torque... but don't rev.

All over after about 1500rpm.

Ok for all out slogging... but depends how you drive.

And not cheap.

Other options -

A properly modified 200 or 300Tdi
A properly tuned Td5

Or cheap option - a BMW engine!!
You can pick up a 2.5Td BMW engine for not that much money, and if you get an early car, the ECU wiring isn't very hard at all (no security).  Basically the same engine as in the RR 38A - but with a few differences.
(fitted to BMW 3 Series, 5 Series and Vauxhall Omega's)

But make sure you get the intercooled version.

I helped fit one to Andy (from Allisport) TMC racer before he sold it... and blinkin'eck it was quick!!!

You could also fit the latter 3.0L TD (which has a variable vain turbo) but the wiring is a little bit more complicated, but there are ways around it.

Presumably the BMW engines need a conversion plate??

Or you could run the BMW spec R380 bell housing, though you would need to check what input shaft length is required.  I'm sure ashcrofts could sort this out.

The racer I worked on ran the BMW gearbox.

Hi.

I used to work for Nene Overland and drove the TGV equipped 130 quite a lot. It was a beast! Fantastic torque, loads of pull, but did rev out quite quickly. An overdrive cured this.

One thing to consider is that this is NOT a direct replacement for the 200 tdi. The TGV 2.8 is a development of the 300 tdi, so the R380 (and tunnel/floorpan  ) is needed - now it's really expensive!

Try Motor and Diesel for an engine only quote or Nene for a fitted price.

Wasn't it Jeremy J Fearn who used to race with the 2.5 BMW diesel, and seemed to win quite frequently?

I had an Omega with that engine and it was a total dog, but I've heard good things about it in Land Rover circles.

Got one of these in my daily driver.
Fitted it in November, now done about 16k.
zero problems, performance is great.
It does rev out quickly 'cos theres more power everywhere.
Low end torque is so big you don't notice the power gains over the 300 at higher rpm.

Bu66ered my gkn overdrive. Now got a 1.2 transfer box. Was easily pulling 80 uphill at about 2500rpm with overdrive in.

Several comp safari racers have commented how well it goes...
