Title: worrying noise

Can anyone please advise.

98 Grand Cherokee 4ltr Orvis. Sometimes when i set off , usually on a slight incline, i hear a grinding metalic noise from the back of the car sounds like gears grinding, or brakes sticking, and only lasts for a few seconds. Normal running is fine dosent appear to be any whirring noises. Could it be the diff? Are these models prone to problems with the diff?, could anyone advise where to go to get it checked out, im in cumbria.  8)

try putting the rear up on axle stands (chock front wheels to stop it moveing)
Then with the hand break off try it in each gear to see if you can hear the noise
it could be the L.S.Diff.   make sure  the car is safe before you get near the axle if you get someone to change gear for you!

change the diff oil & put some friction modifer in it 1st

Im with Daggie on this...sadly ZG/ZJ's do have a weak spot with diffs

This is a common problem on jeeps.
My father in-law is about to rebuild his dif on his 98 jeep cherokee with under 100k on the clock.
He has been told this is common.
The pro boys fit Dana axles but these are not cheap !! :(

They already have Dana's...Pro boys just fit bigger ones :?

Yes they have DANA as standard, but in not sure if mine is a DANA35 or a Dana 44 diff. I believe these are the only two used

I believe they are fitted with the D35.

The grands are well known for having rear diff. problems.

It's been well covered by the Jeep club shown in my signature.

Thanks Guys

I have got the problem sorted now, following a reccomendation on the site i contacted Mik Stansfield at REDNEXX (sales@rednexx.co.uk)

Mik was more than helpful and game me plenty of advice over the phone and via 'e' mail. I took the car to Mik who stripped down the diff and showed me the damage, he gave me various cost options and honest advice. Mik fitted a complete new LSD carrier * gears, 4 bearings, new seals and also changed the oil in my front diff and transfer....... cost ...probably less than the labour charge only at the stealership.

I cant praise this guy enough .... a first class chap
